We all work with data now. I work storing and protecting data and have worked at highly secure sites, government agencies. When I was doing more BAU work we'd get people wanting a file restored and it needs these specific details inside it. My response was always I don't look at your data I'll give the closest dates we have if it has what you need fine, if it doesn't you need to make do but it's your job to look at the contents.

Imagine all of the security procedures in place to encrypt data etc and the top guy just walks out with it. These guys are old so it a lot of it would be physical.

Probably happens in a lot of companies. Protect the IP or customer data and the directors decide the rules don't apply to them.

Now that it is public that the FBI agent in charge of the investigation was a Russian double agent, things look clearer.

The charges look pretty weak though. From what I've read it looks like the charge is for misclassifying a hush money payment as a legal retainer which breaches federal campaign laws.

Note that the hush money payment itself isn't illegal, just calling it a legal retainer is.

Campaign funds? The hush money was paid by his lawyer and then reimbursed/paid back by his real estate company. At least that's what the news companies are reporting.
