Just a little post about the only stat that really matters when it comes to doing well as a team in the NRL: defence.

You can score 50 points a game but if you let in 51 every game, you're not going to win shit.

Likewise, you could theoretically win the competition by scoring only 1 point per game and conceding 0. Not going to happen, but it highlights my point.

So how have the Warriors stacked up over the last few years when it comes to "D"?

YearGamesPoints ConcededPer GameDefence Ladder PosOverall Pos

20112439316.3856
20102448620.2536
20092456523.541214

Defence Ladder Pos = Where they sit in relation to other teams for points conceded. 1 = best defensive team. 16 = worst defensive team.

It's clear to see the correlation between the average points conceded per game, our defence position and subsequently our overall position on the ladder.

Basically, to finish in the top 8, we've needed to concede on average less than 21 points per game.

It's pretty sad reading to see that we've been the third worst defensive team 5 times in the last 11 seasons. Only 3 times have we been in the top 5 best defensive teams. Not at all coincidentally, those were the only years where we finished in the top 8.

So what does it all mean?

Defence wins matches.

Yeah...no shit.

What it really means is that while it's exciting to talk about who we're going to sign to spark our attack: Fifita! Rapana! Turpin! etc etc, I think we need to focus on signing whoever the fuck wants to defend like their lives depend on it. And then coach them to work as a cohesive defensive unit.

Seeing CHT really putting in on defence is heartening to see. Jazz (when error-free) has the same hunger and potential to be a defensive leader. Who else wants to be known as one of the best defenders in the competition? Anyone?

I'd rather win the competition by scoring 1 point per game and conceding 0, than the continuation of lower third finished we have endured for most of our existence.

Boring? Yes.

Winning? Yes.

Well the title certainly hooked me in.

It wasn’t what I was hoping for but good post all the same- defense does win games and it’s so simple it’s often forgotten.
Raises the question, what has happened to ours this year?
Has the loss of mannering been understated?

Thought you might be first in ;)

We had Mannering in 2017 and our D was shit. Last year was either an aberration or we did something right and forgot to do it again this year (or perhaps overdid it in the offseason?).

Any chance u can update the table to include the coach for that year?

From what I can tell it looks like we got the defensive results under cleary

Yeah Cleary was 2010 & 2011, Kearney 2018. Good post, OP.

In my opinion half the problem with this seasons D is that all of our backrowers look to be better middle defenders than edge defenders - both in physical attributes as well as defensive reads. And the one standout was Jazz's line speed against Manly which really did lead our team.

To be fair to SK he mentioned the defence points per game at the Members Forum. He didn't talk a lot about it but it was clear he was well aware of the stat and how important it was. That must be why he was so keen on Kata ;) ...SK really worries me at times.
