The key piece of evidence that got very little publicity...

… mainly because the Auckland Star editor, who hated cops, did a Donald Trump and kept on raving about the bullets....which was fair enough because that part was true...

… the evidence was that many farmers in those days had rubbish tips, usually over the back of the farm.

Thomas had an old trailer with a broken stub axle. The break was nice and clean, straight through.

Half the stub axle remained in the tip, somehow the other half ended up weighing one of the bodies in the Waikato River.

Funny you might think?

So did both juries.

The prosecution hammered it mercilessly through both trials, and made sure every morning the two halves of the axle were placed on the bench in front of the jury.

Now just consider yourself as a jury member, spending all day listening to endless bullshit, and right in front of you were these two half stub axles.

Tell me honestly what you would think, and would you have any doubt the prick was guilty?

… and further with all the headlines about the planted bullets...and the Auckland Star being the local version of Fox News, the press (and the public) paid little attention to the stub axles...

… and further with the massive amount of bleating Thomas and his supporters made, they never mentioned the stub axles, although as time wore on and it got more mention they turned to conspiracy theories like the Detective who was first on the scene did it.

One of their theories was that the Detective had a crush on the woman, (he didn't even know her) so he went to the tip and took half the axle, then murdered them both, and used the axle to weigh the guy down in the river....just to frame Thomas...who he did not know either!!!

A problem with that theory was that it surfaced years afterwards and after the Detective had long died.

Also, there were many very strange stories about the dead woman's father, and who fed the poor child for many days before the bodies were discovered.

So yes ladies and jellybeans, there were many strange happenings around that murder, the planted bullets being particularly stupid.

However, to this very day nobody has explained how how half a stub axle made it from a tip over the back of Thomas's farm to weighing down one of the bodies in the Waikato River.

… and neither did the Royal Commission...

The juries didn't buy that either.

So many believed he presented a sound case, but the Fox news of Auckland decided to rubbish his efforts as well.

The father of the dead woman was strongly suspected of involvement, and even now there are some serious questions about him, and his wife and their actions.

I recall reading an article about 10 years ago revisiting the case, the witnesses, the father ,his wife. It still is a real who dunnit in many regards.

However during months of major investigations Thomas name started cropping up. Nobody knew the fecker. So they had a closer look at him and that is what they found.

That is why the stub axle is so important, it either had to be planted or he did it. The planting theory is as crazy an idea as one could dream up.

I met a couple of Cops who were on that enquiry, well retired when I spoke to them. They were straight up guys who reckoned Thomas did it and that how he was portrayed publicly was very different to the real character. As for the bullet casings they couldn't say whether they were planted, but did say it was strange they were discovered in and area that had been well searched before.

Len Demler was a suspect, the father-in law but he was cast aside when they found Thomas, a somewhat simple man who thought he was helping the inquiry.

The stub axle was from the farm, that could not be denied.

The other half was under the body in the river, that could not be denied.

HTF was it planted?

The Commission was set up by Muldoon. He found the Judge he wanted.

Judges do not like cops who plant evidence, which is fair enough, but it didn't change the facts surrounding the stub axle.
