Corey Lawrie 2007 4

Talented Canterbury Bulls loose forward Corey Lawrie has landed his dream opportunity in rugby league – a contract with the Vodafone Warriors.
A self-confessed late bloomer, the 26-year-old Christchurch-born scaffolder was today confirmed as the latest addition to the Vodafone Warriors’ 2007 playing roster after signing a one-year contract with an option for 2008.
“I knew there was a bit of interest in me (from the Vodafone Warriors). This is a great opportunity,†he said.
“I see it as my one and only chance and I just have to give it everything and see what happens.â€Â
Vodafone Warriors head coach Ivan Cleary said Lawrie had impressed every time he’d watched him play for the beaten Bartercard Cup grand finalists.
“Corey has performed consistently to a very high level in the Bartercard,†said Cleary.
“He’s a good all-round player and has every aspect of the game covered.â€Â
Lawrie, who turns 27 next February, thought time had passed him by.
“I thought age might count against me but now I’ll take on everything that’s thrown at me.â€Â
A New Zealand Residents representative the last three years, Lawrie’s signing is also another signal of the Vodafone Warriors’ commitment to New Zealand rugby league.
“It’s great for the club to have a player from the South Island,†said Cleary.
“We signed Simon Mannering from the Wellington Orcas and recently we’ve taken on Russell and Paora Packer from the Central Falcons. Now we have Corey Lawrie coming on board.â€Â
Canterbury Bulls coach Phil Prescott is thrilled the opportunity has been offered to Lawrie.
“I’m so pleased for him. He’s been one of the best players in the Bartercard Cup for the last three years or so,†he said.
“He mightn’t be the biggest player around but he has plenty going for him.
“He wouldn’t have the size to play in every position in a team but you could put him anywhere and he’d instinctively know what is required of him in each one of them. He’s that kind of a player.â€Â
Lawrie will join the Vodafone Warriors for their off-season training programme in early November.

Obviously signed to replace Faumuina, though haven't seen him in action before. From what I've heard he's a good worker and does all the hard yards for the team.

Sounds more like a replacement for Guttenbeil based on his style of play. I think the Warriors might be pinning their hopes on Lauaki to be the ball playing forward to replace Sione.

We have quite a few donkeys in the forwards. I think we need a couple of game breakers or guys who can offload at least.

Lawrie will be good cover if we have injuries in the pack at 9, 11, 12, 13 but they will have to be careful that we have a bit of fire power in the forwards because our backs sure as shit don't create much on their own.

Sounds like he has a good attitude & is rearing to go, with a dash of experience(if only at BC). Welcome to the family Corey!

i agree fully, we don't have any line-breaking back rowers at the club (and haven't had any quality ones since Lauati'iti) Where in todays game all the top 5 teams have numerous backrowers that can run 40 metres to score a solo try, we've just got tacklers and guys that hit the ball up. need a bit of flair like the warriors of old.

I have played Mad dog in paint ball he is a big man, im sure he is over 181cm tall.
He is probaly better than Wairangi Koopu alot more skill, good to see another Panther has a shot at theNRL.

This sort of old news but i couldn't find a post with any info on him so here one is. We have a lot of young talent this year, mostly NZ talent as well. Good news for young NZ rugby league.
