I'd be interested to hear your guys thoughts on him.
Gets untold wraps but tbh I don't see what all the fuss is about. In last years finals I thought he was over shadowed by meads and the year before it was Johnson pulling out the big plays when they were needed.
Must admit I was shocked by the size of him at the sths trial- he was warming up right in front of me and is def a big unit but once he got on the field he looked a bit out of his depth to me. Doesn't look to have much mongrel in him and seems like a bit of a jersey grabber. Also i have doubts wether he's fast enough to play in the halves?
I'm not death riding the guy, I'd love to see him prove me wrong. He's still very young and a year in the vulcans may do wonders for him but i wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't live up to expectations.
Too harsh? Thoughts?

Yeah, I tend to agree. Not sold on him yet. Will be interested to watch his progress this year. Although if he plays another year in Toyota Cup, we still may be none the wiser this time next year!

i agree but i havent seen too much of him, he was injured for a bit last year wasnt he?.

meads was the standout in the games i watched last year but i didnt see too many games.

I think he is slightly overrated and that meads is very underrated. I'm looking forward to seeing how they go this year for the 20's. I wouldn't be unhappy for Meads to get a call up to a 1st grade contract this time next year.

In that 2010 Juniors grand final he over shadowed Johnson tbh,I rate Carlos,a gifted player IMO,remember him scooping up a ball near his toes to score, great hands & athleticism, also during last years grand final he pulled off the huge play in the dying minutes, scooted almost 50 metres up field on a bung leg to put Meads in place for the droppy so he's a big game player IMO,don't like him in the centres personally, would much rather see him alongside Johnson in the halves, sooner rather then later

Think the ball near his toes was for the Jnr Kiwis but other points taken!

True that, moment of epic skill that try

Wasn't Carlos man of the match in that 2010 grand final?

Yeah he was. Thought it was a strange decision tho- Johnson layed on most of the tries and didn't miss a kick

Yeah I had a funny feeling Carlos won that MOM award, kind of bewildering that Carlos or Shaun Johnson both never made that years NYC team of the year because they were both dominant in their positions, another 1up for Carlos is that he was selected for the NYC team of the year last year at standoff & that's where I think he's best suited,I'm not praising the guy like he's god's gift to league because he definitely has things to work on,defence is the most obvious but there's definitely something there that's worth taking a gamble on in top grade,I think he would handle it quite comfortably, you can never really get a true gauge of a players potential from trial matches IMO,when things are on the line & trophies to play for that's when he steps up his game, that's why I think he's a big game player

it will be interesting to see what Brian McClennan does with Carlos, having played toyota cup for two years i think hes learned all he can get out off it and needs to be challanged more he's probably needing to play NSW cup to help further his development especially with Maloney leaving at Seasons end. idealy i would like to see him playing mostly this season for the Vulcans but also get enough games in for the junior warriors that hie will be elgible for them when they get to the playoffs

See, people try to tone down Carlos because perhaps they're expecting another Johnson to roll off the production line. Which obviously can't happen, as Johnson is a one off. So i get that, but surely Carlos on athleticism alone is a good prospect, safe hands, solid build. I'd like him as a centre for sure, but with Johnson running the show, eventually like the Cowboys, we'll be able to afford a running 5/8. A true luxury we've missed for a while.

Any criticsm is a little harsh and earlier regarding Carlos.
The bloke is 19 years old with a year in Toyota Cup.
While Johnson - it pranced around like the 2nd coming of jesus.
He couldnt tackle until last year and it wasnt til the year before that that he couldnt
put people in holes
Johnson used to be a touch player - not even a real playmaker.
So plenty of time for Carlos to develop.
Atm he is a bit like John sutton rather than Brad Fitler.

Ftr - Johnson has improved year after year etc.
so much he has so many people wetting their pants in exitement.
Whilst Carlos has always been a natural footballer and one of the most talented Juniors.
He could plays anywhere from 1 - 6.
While he favour 6 personally I think he has future in other positions.

As for Meads, being under rated - I think he is tad over-rated.
Not that he is crap of anything.
He had a good year but had a great opportunity to play in a killer team.
Another young halfback could have been given a go - and I think similar results and they would have looked good too.

Meads is frustrating to watch - with all his mannerisms.
If I was playing against him I would come out of the line and smash him.
hALFBACKS are supposed to be cheeky but he is different.

I have already replied in this thread
But seen the comment " i have doubts wether he's fast enough to play in the halves?"

Speed is nice to have in the halves . .. but it aint really a given requirement.

Wally lewis . .. the king .. never fast just instinct.
Thurston . .. labelled best current player - not fast at all.

Anyway he has got reasonable speed - probably just doesnt look like it
If he gets a run at centre or fullback then we might see it

Does need to get physical . .. Carlos is massive and has guns on him
but then so does Shaun Johnson and he is still a bit of a powderpuff too. (though he has improved)

I like him - I do admit to the deficiencies that some of you have pointed out, but the one thing that's struck me is that he seems to be a thinking player. We've got plenty of physical talent in the squad, but that thinking is something that should see him succeed imo.

I rate Meads for the same reason. Both him and Carlos are an invaluable sort of player to have around guys like Johnson and Manu.

I'm with you on this. Carlos is a huge future in the game. He's a gifted ball player with the gift of being able to read a game.

see that's the thing- I've never heard anyone try to tone down Carlos, never heard a bad word spoken. It's just been wrap after wrap after wrap. Hes been talked up for a long time, expectations seem huge and I'm not convinced he's gonna be able to live up to that.
I'm actually surprised alot of people seem to agree, I thought I'd be playing a lone hand, I guess the closer he gets to first grade the more scrutiny he's gonna face.
Good luck to him.

I don't feel Carlos is over-rated. I think he is showing he is a talented young player still maturing into a top first-class player.

I do feel Meads is definitely under-rated.

With Carlos I felt last year, though he had the brains for the job, his body still seemed a little immature and under-developed. He looked like a kid running, kind of floppy and lazy-looking in his running style. With the massive physical bulk-up in the off-season, I will be interested to see how he goes this year. I have faith he will be ready by years end to step into first grade full-time.

he has the ability and build to be a excellent running 5/8 or center, the only thing i question is his attitude,
he seems to do the bare minimum during most of the games I've seen, he should be making more of
a consistent impact for a player with his skill level.

That said, he could simply be a lazy ass teenager (like most are), and may turn into the energizer bunny
in the years to come.

Patu confirmed he was part of a group of players that went back to training in November in order to improve their physiques, Fish and Benry were other members of this group. Can't remember the others. I don't think you need to question his attitude off the field.

He may be a bit like Benji, who used to (still does to an extent) drift in and out of games. I think he was crueled by injuries last year, so he may have been a bit gun shy. He was a lot more active in 2010 imo.
