NRL Teams Canberra Raiders

Gary Lineker went to play in Barcelona, being a bright lad h took time to learn not only Spanish but Catalan and immersed himself in the culture,
I remember the Barcelona tenor, it miht have been Jose Carerras saying in an interview how loved Lineker was by the people of Barclona.
I don’t know much about Williams but I suspect a lot of these young lads go to Australia and think it’s the same as home except warmer, totally incapable of acclimatising.
I recall that when Canberra was fist mooted as a capital one of the reasons choses was it was so cold the English might like it. Can't find a link though. NSW beer doesn't compare with an English free house either.

The Williams discussion on NRL360 was interesting especially the part about the pre-season when it first came up and some Sydney clubs were he's homesick his manager has been ringing around cause he doesn't like Canberra and wants to be closer to the beach and get the full Australian experience.

We have in the past had english players who have wanted to go home. We have discussed how the Raiders have had success recruiting from England. That's two gone now. Might be homesick or like us saying Auckland isn't the best place it could be Canberra. Or they wanted to get as far away from Ricky as possible.

The Raiders were one of the fancied sides coming into the season. Their issues are more than just Williams being homesick.

Nicoll-Klokstad being injured is a blow but look at the injury tolls of the other sides.

The coach is a know sook but listen to his press conferences he is starting to sound like he's running out of ideas. He has been there a long time. When he first started at the Raiders we were racking up big scores against them with Tomkins putting Hurrell into space. Those two haven't been here for a long time.

He's a club legend and close to the CEO so it could lead to some tough discussions or they might not want to make it and keep going.

You’d think Williams would have discussed this with Bateman before he moved, then again Bateman comes across as spectacularly dim so he may not have got the correct answer. Williams may have thought he was signing up to a beach lifestyle, have his missus missing home and her mother, or simply had enough of Ricky the gobshite. Sounds like Hodgson fell into the latter camp

I can hear them now on the Raiders forum, "sack Ricky and give Cappy a go, the players all like him apparently, he sounds like he knows what to do." Ahh it's good watching other clubs repeat all our mistakes as we pass them on our way up the ladder.

Another factor in the Williams departure is Wigan need a 7 as Hastings is going to the Tigers after this season. Wouldn’t surprise me if he’s been asked if he’d be interested in coming back and has agitated from there. What he probably didn’t bank on was being dropped by Canberra with immediate effect

Yeah think there have been talk of Hodgson wanting to move on as well.

Can understand his position as it might not be him homesick. If his wife is having trouble settling or getting support if they have kids it would hard on him. The player gets time with the team to take their mind off things, a bunch of guys to go out with. Their partners either need to spend time with the other partners or meet new people.

They spoke about that on NRL360 that it matches up with Hastings coming back. I wouldn't be surprised if it went that way.

I thought the narrative they were pushing (particularly Hoops) that the club was 100% in the right with its approach to dismissing him was a bit off.
Fundamentally they could be half right and the guy could be an entitled little pain in the a$$. I don’t know. But the way the club has managed it is poor. If he’s asked for a release and claimed mental health issues you have to consider the optics of the clubs reaction and handling of that situation to other players and fans.
They tried to use the fact that the Warriors all played away from home last year as some kind of justification for why he should have stuck it out but the fact is Fusitua, Maumalo, Passi and Vuniyayawa all went home being homesick and the club didn’t dismiss them or cut their contracts.
Can’t see how Canberra will continue to attract UK talent if Bateman, Hodgson & Williams are all due to leave in short order and all pretty unhappy with their time their.
Good luck with Princess Johnson I say Sticky!

Cappy was thrust into the job a bit too early in his development, I think he would be a better prospect second time round if he got a chance at the Faiders.

Not surprised that he wanted his cake and eat it too. Ricky said "No Cake For You" 🤣

it's on the watchNRL app. I pay about £120 for the year, has all the games, Tests, SOO and chat shows. all live or on rreplay as well, and easy to chromecast to the telly.
I only subscribe to the free highlights version of that. Paying the full whack for Sky incl phone line and broadband already so it’s another cost, there’s only so many hours a day to watch stuff as well
Missus and the younger daughter watch a lot of the movies on Sky, I watch ESL, golf, cricket, boxing so we get decent value out of Sky

ahhhh, I don't get sky sports as I'd never have the chance to watch anything.

I can watch it on my phone while working at home and can stream onto the spare telly which is not hooked up to anything except a chromecaster.

Look at those 4 players now... perhaps the better option is to cut your loses straight away with players who are not all in.
