Canberra Raiders star Jordan Rapana has been ruled out for six months, with the winger sidelined until late May due to a shoulder injury suffered on international duty with the Kiwis.

Rapana is expected to return between round 11 and round 14 of the 2019 Telstra Premiership season.

The New Zealand speedster had surgery on a dislocated shoulder after suffering the injury in the second Test against England last week.

Under a new system brought into place earlier this year, clubs can receive a salary cap exemption for the pro-rata value of an injured player's contract, up to a maximum of $350,000, but only in cases in which the injured player misses at least 12 NRL games.

Rapana joins Ata Hingano on Canberra's long-term injury list, with Hingano also out with a shoulder injury until around round six next season.

Raiders skipper Jarrod Croker has returned to light training with the club after recovering from a knee injury.

That Grand Final still holds up today. I rented the video of it (remember those) from a video store (remember those). The game was a lot different back then as completing your sets was important but not to the point where coaches would bleat about percentages in the post match press conference.

It was end to end stuff. Pretty fast game as well. A lot of drama with the Meninga ankle tap and the drop kick hitting the post. That drop kick made quite a sound to if I remember correctly.

I have it as part of a DVD set (remember those) of classic Grand Finals. I ended up watching some of the others when I first got it, depending on time I may have to wind the way back machine to 1989.

A special game that one. I remember the build up was massive, news reports all week and dicussions at school about if you were going to watch it and who you were going for.

The first game of league I ever watched and I've been hooked ever since.

Change shirt would look better as all white with green collar and cuffs and keep the yellow and blue strips that are on the green one.

Most shirts look like an explosion in a paint factory nowadays mind

Sad news for Raiders fans today.

I remember back in the early 90's my class mate who I used to discuss league with instead of doing school work went on holiday to Australia. Not to sure who his dad's contact was but he met Don Furner and must of got great seats to a game or something. Main thing I remember is him constantly telling me to look at his hand, this hand shook Don Furner's hand.

The Canberra Raiders have announced the passing of inaugural coach and club legend Don Furner, who died on Monday night.
In a statement released on Tuesday the club said: “The Canberra Raiders would like to acknowledge the passing of inaugural Coach and Life Member Don Furner Senior (1932-2020), who passed away last night following a long battle with illness.

“Born in Condobolin, Don had an impressive rugby league career, playing for a range of clubs across both Queensland and New South Wales, including Souths (Toowoomba), Roma, Junee and Queanbeyan. He represented Queensland on eight occasions and toured England with the 1956-57 Kangaroos.

Andrew Voss will present a special tribute to Don Furner tonight on Fox League: 7PM – 1987 GRAND FINAL. 8PM – 1986 KANGAROO TOUR – FIRST TEST

“Forced to retire through injury, he embarked on a highly successful coaching career, taking Eastern Suburbs to a Grand Final in 1972 and piloting the Queanbeyan Blues to a remarkable 10 premierships in 13 years.

“Inevitably, Don became a fundamental part of the Raiders’ push to enter the NSWRL, recruited by club patriarch Les McIntyre to add genuine credibility to the bid. He was subsequently named Head Coach when the club entered the competition in 1982.

“Furner’s wealth of experience as a coach in country football, together with his unmatched ability to spot raw talent, were invaluable in the Raiders’ testing early years.

“He remained unperturbed, steadily putting together a squad that surprised the League world when it almost made the semi-finals in only its third year.

His recruitment of Mal Meninga in late 1985, which then attracted so much talent to the club, was a masterstroke.

Head Coach until the end of 1986, Don took the team to a Grand Final (with co-coach Wayne Bennett) in 1987.

“In a matter of a few years he had laid the foundations of the club for the long-term future, foundations based on open, attacking football, hard work and mateship.”

Raiders Chairman Dr Allan Hawke paid tribute to Furner and said he had the unique distinction at excelling in multiple roles in rugby league.

“Don Furner Senior was a fundamental piece of the architecture in putting our club together,” Dr Hawke said.

“He distinguished himself as a player, an exemplary Coach and then as an administrator.

“Very few people would have the gift to excel in all the facets of rugby league, but Don Furner Senior did.”

Hardyman's Yugo

I didn’t realise until this weekend that a lad from my school played for them in the 1980’s. A lad called Milton Huddart, the year below me at School. I knew he played for Whitehaven, Carlisle and Leigh but must have missed the Canberra one (assuming he made first grade that is). He was in the same school year as former international referee Stuart Cummings.

Don't think he made FG while in Canberra.

Maybe not, but those stats are worse than useless tbh as there are big chunks missing. An article about him is here.

LONDON CALLING: How George Williams dumped the Raiders by TEXT

Storm fight back, kill off Raiders' hope | 01:41
James Hooper from Fox Sports

A text message from George Williams to the Canberra Raiders welfare manager on Tuesday morning has triggered a whirlwind end to the Green Machine half-back’s NRL career.

After a month of agitating about being homesick for a return to the UK, Williams sent a text message on Tuesday informing the Raiders he was refraining from attending the club’s regulation training session.

When the Raiders welfare manager went to coach Ricky Stuart, the Raiders coach then telephoned Williams to check what was going on.
The now-departed halfback told Stuart he did not feel OK to attend training and was unlikely to be mentally OK to play against the Roosters in round 12.
Stuart then went to see Raiders CEO Don Furner who immediately called Williams into Canberra HQ to grant him the request he has been agitating for.

Two different stories, i think Ricky went mental and told him to fuck off 🤣
Sounds about right. Williams seems shocked that he’s been let go with immediate effect. If he’s been agitating to go for a while it’s disruptive to the rest of the players so best to get him out.

Williams will have a host of ESL
clubs after him but he’ll need to take a big drop in pay.

I don’t know much about Williams but I suspect a lot of these young lads go to Australia and think it’s the same as home except warmer, totally incapable of acclimatising. Reminds me when footballer Gary Lineker went to play in Barcelona, being a bright lad h took time to learn not only Spanish but Catalan and immersed himself in the culture, Mark Hughes (thick as a castle wall) went at the same time and stayed in his apartment all day with the Welsh flag draped over the balcony like a pissed up tourist
