Well a precedent has been set with these young guys by suspending them on various charges, made a mockery of the NRL's rulings pretty much. If things flare up in Origin those big boys could be looking at some serious punishments if they follow suit and by all accounts Queensland isn't down playing that things could get heated in Origin 2 after the Gallen/Myles flare up in SOO 1, Papalii has been brought in specifically to unsettle Gallen. I'm fairly certain someone is going to erupt, too much at stake, I'm sure we'll see a bit of biffo even with these new rules

I find the punishment scale a total mystery. Gallen did the same thing and got 1 week, and he has history. on the footy show they were talking about a fight I 2002 (I think) where someone threw a punch ala the Nat Miles incident and he got 18 weeks. Now this guy looks the same and hes going for 2-3 ? wonder if the guy who got 18 was a kiwi about to start camp for an international?

I love the defence of he thought he was about to get hit

i'm not seeing to much in this to be honest. Swinging arm to the belly? really? and i'm surprised Matai hasn't been punched in the face more often.

Have to admit that in my playing years if there'd been a throw a punch you're off rule, I'd have spent most of my time on the sidelines.

That was Danny williams wacking mark oneil. Tate was looking at the ground- oneil was looking the other way. The only difference was Williams landed a massive right hand and knocked oneil out cold while Merlin's weak ass punch would've hurt his hand more than Tate's titanic jaw.
Williams was a loose canon- bashed Ben roarty ( his teammate) over a game of pool too- think he smashed him with the pool cue?

Played all my footy in NZ for halswell- fair to say we were probably the most hated team in chch. Halswell v hornby games in particular were always guaranteed a few blues. They had a big one bout a month ago actually- the press had gone down to cover halswells club day which was a huge success but instead they took the chance to plaster photos of all in brawls all over the paper and bag out rugby league- as they do. Farkin chch press- always running the game down and sucking off the rah rahs.

Yeah I guess he was lucky he got hiin.in the belly. It is pretty reckless to come in with a stiff arm when someone is falling with two people on already on him, it could easily go very wrong. Still I take your point that it ended up harmless enough, though I still think it is pretty cheap

Matai is a grub and did run a long way but still if you openly throw two punches you are going for at least a week.

Interesting comments over last night by Matt Adamson, his view was that there is a lack of professionalism by players towards each other in the NRL. He blamed Allgood and Matai, he said Matais gestures towards the sideline were not on. Ricky Stuart was right when he said it was nothing to do with Matai and he should not have got involved.

I completely agree that Matai approaching him should be a mitigating factor if he has not ran over there nothing would have happened. I don't blame Matai for seeing red after the incident though if someone has punched you in the face twice then you can't really be told off for an inappropriate gesture
