Sad story about Ben? Not that i know of. I know he was cut by the Warriors and went to Widnes. Cricket wise he could have gone onto higher senior honours he had gone with cricket instead of league. Ben has a younger brother Tim who is still with my old club Suburbs i think.

Perhaps it was Tim I'm thinking of... cancer or something? I'm not sure.

Actually that rings a bell. I have a funny feeling that Ben might have beaten cancer or something.

I'm pretty sure Tim or Ben Lythe had bone cancer and a huge operation removing loads of his leg and replacing it with some terminator cyborg type deal, he continued to play cricket afterwards...

Could have details wrong, but yeah

I think it was Tim. I last heard that Ben was coaching and playing RU for Mahurangi - a gardner/nurseryman/landscaper too I think.

The rugby league community is rallying around former Vodafone Warrior Ben Lythe (pictured playing for the Vodafone Warriors in 2000) after his wife Mardie was seriously injured in a flying fox accident last week. Photo: Photosport.
Brother-in-law Nick Margison said Mardie had severed her spine in the fall.
“Tragically she is now a paraplegic and has zero chance of ever walking again,” he said.
“Her next four months will be spent in a spinal unit before returning home in a wheelchair.
“A trust fund has been set up so Ben can take time off work to look after their four kids and to find a rental without stairs that will allow wheelchair access to be built.”
Margison appealed to Lythe’s former team-mates at the Vodafone Warriors, the Mount Albert Lions and the Glenora Bears to contribute to the fund.
Former Vodafone Warriors Awen Guttenbeil is working with the old boys’ network to generate support for Warrior No 79 Lythe, who made five NRL appearances for the club in 2000, represented New Zealand Residents and played extensively on the Auckland club scene and in the old Bartercard Cup competition.
Vodafone Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah said the club would donate $5000 towards the fund.
“Our hearts go out to Ben, Mardie and their family at this terrible time,” he said.
