One of rugby league’s most famous names is set to link with the Vodafone Warriors after confirmation South Sydney back rower Bayley Sironen has agreed terms for a three-year contract from next season.

The 23-year-old is the son of the legendary Paul Sironen and younger brother of Manly Warringah’s Curtis Sironen.

After five games in his first two NRL seasons, Sironen established himself as a frontline player for the Rabbitohs this year appearing in 19 games to lift his career tally to 24.

“We have had our eyes on Bayley for some time but we didn’t have the positions available at the time,” said Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan.

“Fortunately he became available now. (Head coach) Nathan (Brown) was keen to add a point of difference to our squad to balance our key signings and Bayley will bring that.

“He comes from one of the game’s greatest families and will add some invaluable footy IQ to our squad.”

O’Sullivan said the Vodafone Warriors were grateful to South Sydney CEO Blake Solly, head coach Wayne Bennett and football manager Mark Ellison for their handling of Sironen’s release.

“I was really keen to add an edge/middle forward to our roster for 2021 and Bayley fits the bill,” said new Vodafone Warriors head coach Nathan Brown.

“He was able to fill in at five-eighth and centre as well as the back row in 2020 so he adds the versatility, skill and defensive capabilities that we were looking for.

“His addition puts pressure on all our forwards for positions and adds invaluable depth of quality in our back row.”

The 186cm, 101kg Sironen made his NRL debut with the Wests Tigers in 2017 but played just one more NRL match for the club before linking with South Sydney in 2019.

He becomes the seventh new addition to the Vodafone Warriors’ 2021 squad following the signings of Ben Murdoch-Masila (Warrington), Kane Evans (Parramatta), Euan Aitken (St George Illawarra), Addin Fonua-Blake (Manly Warringah), Sean O’Sullivan (Brisbane) and Marcelo Montoya (Canterbury Bankstown).

Replacing Papalii innit? So guess Kearney was the issue with recruitment after all. They aren't having much trouble picking up players now - there's not even playing time guaranteed for this fulla

Hopefully nothing to do with Tohu Harris.
This is a another great signing, seen him play this year.
Good skills, Tough, Versatile. A lot of potential.
This side is bloody coming together.

Have we ever been so active recruiting?
We will be recognisable next year.
Also picking a starting forward pack and bench is going to be tricky

Really liking the signings so far. Looking for those value picks.
No one would have picked Jamayne Tounua-Brown, Katoa, and Murchie kicking on to the levels they have. (Katoa had raps but he could be the next Taumalolo)
All we need is 1 or 2 of the new guys to do the same and we have a formidable team.

We've been very busy and it's also efficient (cap) recruiting which I'm most happy about. Yes forward pack will be tricky but in a good way.

Great signing I thought he was solid for the rabbits and brings versatility I would like to see them shift Tohu Harris to lock at some point

I wonder if they plan to use Ben Murdoch-Masila as a forward after this signing

Possibly a bench utility signing, Egan to play 80, Lawton possibly not being signed after next year, Sironen can play back row, centre and half at a stretch.
And Tohu Harris stays after signing last contract of his playing career.

Nobody saw this coming. In the rabbitohs forum they're gutted losing him. It's puzzling because they're saying he just resigned with them a few weeks ago.. There must've been some kind of swap deal. What do you guys think??

Someone's gotta be on their way out of the 30 surely, why would they lock it down so early otherwise?

A few months ago when PO'S listed the positions he was targeting a big bopper was one and another was a middle/edge back rower. Hoping that Sironen is that middle/edge back rower and it's nothing to do with Tohu Harris. Can't see him as a replacement for Tohu Harris as he's considerably smaller but obviously has a similar skill set. Think he adds to the many shapes and sizes PO'S is looking for, we've got a real mix.

It also says he’s signed to terms, which I’m assuming the contract isn’t finalised yet,

which could mean another roster move might need to occur for it to count (that is, if Paasis move hasn’t been finalised yet)
