Auckland/New Zealand Warriors Autographs Open Thread

Just a question for those who have managed to get player autographs on jerseys.

What is the best pen to use on a black jersey? I have read paint pens take too long to dry and get smudged as well as blob if pressed too hard. I have also read silver Sharpies can let you down, even though the black and blue ones work well.

I might have an opportunity to get my Wellington jersey signed by some players and want to make sure it works well. My wife just bought a white fabric pen, but I tried it under a collar of an old jersey and it went on invisible and eventually tuned white but not cleanly, so that one is out. I won't be around to take the care and precautions needed, so want something fool proof.

I want the signatures to last, as well. I am not the type to put the jersey away or on display and not wear, so I need something that will take washing.

Also wondering what would be the most effective looking colour, silver, white or perhaps gold to blend in with the jersey detailing?

Have had a few autographs on some jerseys over time but only ever on light coloured jerseys. Any advice from people with experience, would be great.

I've got a Kiwis shirt signed and I'm sure they used a silver sharpie pen. When I was at a Warriors game a few years ago I got some of the boys to sign my Warriors flag and they also used a silver sharpie. I haven't had any issues with them at all and there were no smudges or anything. Hopefully some others can offer some advice as well :) Good luck

Cheers. I have been thinking of sending 2 silver Sharpies with the jersey, just in case. I would hate for my mate to get there and find they can't sign it.

No worries. Haha yeah, its better to be overly prepared than not prepared at all!!

And it suites my OCD to go overboard. I'd lie awake wondering if my marker was going to work.

Haha I wish I had a bit of that OCD! A few years ago, the same time the boys signed my flag, we also got to go into the locker room and meet a few of the boys. We had been doing the tourist thing in the morning so had already used most of the battery on the camera, went to take the pic of my sister and Manu and the camera battery runs out...had to resort to using my phone camera and it was a bit blurry!! Now I know for next time, don't overuse the camera AND take back up batteries!! Haha

If its the Wellington jersey it has a lot of yellow that would fit a large number of signatures... So black would be the best bet!

I would prefer the signatures on the black. There is a lot more space for them. It would be a bit congested getting all the signatures on the 2 yellow Vees, unless some are put on the shoulders. And if I use silver, it wouldn't matter if they go over the yellow.

I think the players carry black Sharpies after the games. But to get a black jersey signed in a contrasting colour, no doubt I would need to supply my own marker pen.

It looks like the silver Sharpie is the go (it will tie in nicely with the silver strings?, checks?, whatever above the yellow Vee. I was just a little concerned, as I Googled what was best and found a professional autograph collectors website that says the silver Sharpies are not as good for autographs on jerseys as the black and blue ones.

DO NOT USE WHITE PAINT PEN! Takes ages to dry and fades over time. Same with gold ink pens. I always use Artline Silver pens but lately have only been able to get their calligraphy pens. Sharpie thick point pens are also great. Make sure your mate takes a rag or piece of cardboard that he can keep dabbing the pen with to get more ink out after every second or third autograph.

DONT GET THE BACK SIGNED! Theres plenty of space on the front for 20 odd signatures and the silver will show up well on the yellow V too. If you get the back signed it'll be worth $80-$150, basically the price anyone wants to pay for a secondhand jersey. On the front signed by 20 players will be worth $250-$350.

This ones been signed with a fine tip pen. Go for slightly thicker tip to make the autographs pop more. And you can also see that the pen wasnt dabbed often enough as some signatures are faint...

Cheers for that. Exacty what I was after. Is the Artline one a pen that needs to be pushed down to load the tip or is it similar to the Sharpies?

I was going to ask him to make sure he doesn't let anyone sign the back. Made that mistake in 2003. Thanks Lance!

I'm not concerned about the value of the jersey. I would never sell it, and will probably wear it to death. I always wear my latest jersey on game day (and revoltingly enough, my superstition doesn't allow for it to be washed while on a winning streak - was a little relieved to get it washed last week). You can barely make out the signatures on my 2003 jersey, but I still love wearing it. And my old Pony hoodie back in the 80s with all of Herbs autographs on it was worn until you couldn't even tell it was signed.

There is a chance I won't get any signatures, but I live in hope that my mate will come through for me.

Just as an example of one jersey that was deciphered on Facebook. Unsure of why the jersey has been signed twice by so many players...

I don't see too much wrong with the above. 14 looks like Hohaia not Ali. Not sure about the double ups.

I'll post one of each player I have as a guide. Could take a while and I'll do a few at a time.

Thank you Ever Hopeful. Was always going to need your help with this :). Be a mean resource once its done.

Hoping to get jersey and card autographs as they can look different. Also as you state early and later autographs...

Logos are Tony Kemp and Bluey. This is the second variation of Daniel Anderson's. Leuluai's tends to vary. Mannering had a different (very) early signature. Locke's changed a little and Shaun Johnson's signature has become a bit more sloppy (as you could understand).

Last lot. If anyone has access to players, I refuse to bug them in their private lives, but there are several signatures or upgrades I need. PM me if you can help. I am considering getting some cards custom made for all players that represented the Warriors to the best of my ability - to that end I would like to track down a signature of Sonny Fai to create a cut signature card (thicker card with paper signature embedded). It would be expensive to do, but worth the effort. If worst comes to worse I'll slice up a signed jersey and create jersey signature cards...don't tell Mt.Wellington :stop:.

Notes for the cards below:

Isaac Luke used to have a beautiful signature, but it has changed many times over the years and is now a scribble. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck used to have a full signature. I have included two variations of Lisone and Fusitua. Ben Matulino usually signs Ben M, but was very considerate of the more expensive cards and gave full signatures. The logo is Andrew McFadden.

Cheers
