I think this news is HUGE and the biggest thing law change the government has done. it allows for new sleepouts and car ports less than 30 mtrs squared to be built on your property without council consents.

My question - how big should a sleep out be? Am thinking of making a granny flat in my back yard. Am thinking of converting my double garage which is 36 square metres.
Does anyone here have a sleep out? How many square metres is it? What features does it have? A toilet? Running water?

Anyone who can help with some knowledge on sleep outs would be great.

Also this thread is one copied from another site it was on. We had a random questions thread for people to post a project they were working on, or a song lyric they couldn't remember or whatever.

Miket12 is your man, I can't actually remember exact sizes but to keep it interesting different councils tend to interpret the same rules differently depending on who's got the red stamp on any given day.

Here’s some general things. If you’re in Auckland, the council generally don’t allow granny flats any more and sleep outs can’t include cooking or laundry facilities and can’t be rented out separately from the main house.

I’ve actually had an enquiry today about turning some shopping containers into a sleep out in Otara.
