“It’s not about the wage we’re getting. It’s about setting up funds for past players, looking after our younger boys, welfare, some of our tertiary education stuff is not where we want it to be" ~ Kurt Capewell

Has there ever been a strike/ lockout in Nz/ Australia pro sport?

2 years after the game almost went bust; after a huge proposed player pay increase offered; while the countries are suffering a cost of living crisis.

Greed.

If the players are stupid enough to push for it, the public will turn against them viciously when the media gets into them.
Don't know but I remember an NHL lockout
The plsyers had enough money in the bank to last 3 months without pay,
An 82 game season cut down to approv 40 games.

The union will have a stipend ready to pay the players.

Management knows the public will side against the players. The next decision both sides need to make is which makes the both look the best. If the NRL are considering a lock out then a player strike is even better for their optics,

The next step in the process is for lies about the other side to be circulated,

Management will not bend on a retirement fund, And will be prepared to lose half the season rather than agree. My opinion only.

This is the management that nearly ran the game into the ground. They basically said they had to run during COVID or they would go under. We should side with them over players wanting retired players to be looked after getting tertiary education. Wow what a world we live in.

I don't know what to think about this, I have to work till I'm 70 to retire and I'm not on 500 0r 600 thousand to play a game I love, would someone tell tthemto bank some if it or invest it for once your finished playing.
Just my thoughts.

The average employee will earn about $2.5m over the average 45 year working life. A $300k NRL player will earn that much in a 8 year career. Many will earn significantly more. They have the opportunity to invest the big up front lump sum for the next 33 years. Plus get a second career.

They will say that many only play a few years and don’t make lots of money… well then you haven’t had a proper professional career so you need to get another job.

They will say many have broken bodies… so have a lot of us that had amateur sporting careers. We still have to go out and work.

There are a very few that have significant physically debilitating injuries from the sport. There are many builders; forestry workers and farmers that have physically wrecked their bodies as well and in the extreme cases ACC, benefits and insurances looks after them.

I think it’s a privilege to play the sport they love that opens up many doors and opportunities post career. It’s an opportunity most of us could only dream of.

Are there super provisions built in to players' individual contracts ? that would be the usual neo-liberal compromise, surprised if not given the presence of CBUS and other mutual societies in Australian sport plus private insurers here

If I'm the players I'd boycott the All Stars. Makes a point, embarrasses the NRL but won't upset the fans a great deal.

Typical of the nutbag Sharks to do something half-cocked....

Maybe it’s widely known over in Aussie that vlandys is a slimy prick because a lot of the support I’m seeing is for the players. Fans were happy that he kept the comp afloat at the time but there doesn’t seem to be that support they enjoyed in that period, with many labelling the nrl as arrogant. Think they would be wise to join negotiations, it’s either going to be the nrl or the players who are going to derail the start of the season. Whichever won’t be looked at fondly by the fans if it’s delayed at all.

Every single player I follow on IG has this post up. Seen at least 50. Something has to give and it appears as if the players mean business...

Kennedy Cherrington has been tweeting about how frustrating this is for the NRLW players who do not have health insurance covered by the NRL and still don't have contracts or a timeframe for the next NRLW season.

"No private health insurance = no play. We must cover ourselves as athletes. That’s the reality of being an NRLW player at the moment. Frustrating that 22 DAYS OUT from the game we are still stressing over this rather than focusing on the celebration of our 2 cultures"

So basically if any NRLW players get seriously injured in rep games like Indigenous vs Maori or HNWP they're fucked.

Saw this on a league site. Really sounds like the nrl is being unreasonable and the male players are in support of their female counterparts among some other things. As I said earlier, the majority of support I’m seeing is for the players.

The media will decide this with which angle they promote to the general public. The public pressure and narrative of which side is the unreasonable bad guy will force movement.

And the media will be self interested in wanting the season to start on time without any delays, so look out players association over the coming weeks…

What’s the background here? The men not signing has impacted the woman as much as the NRL.

To me, the huge mens NRL demands appear to me at the expense of the NRWL? The NRL have stressed that they need to take into account financial considerations outside of the men's game.

The current offer to the men’s game is 40.5% of the NRLs revenue (and a 22% pay increase). The players want an extra 2% of revenue. It is framed as more payment to juniors or payment for finals games or retirement packages but essentially they want a bigger slice of the pie.

The RLPA is also calling for more investment in the NRLW - despite their demands leaving less of the pie to pay them… the NRLW actually NEED a bigger share of the pie because they need to fund the growth of the product. The clubs are also negotiating for extra pay to fund the clubs. The grassroots need extra funding to grow the game. Everyone needs more so the question is what gets prioritised.

For context - percentage of revenue for various sports:

Global sports with huge international revenue:
EPL (football) - 72%
PGA golf - 55%
NBA - 50%
NFL - 48%

Smaller ‘local’ competitions with smaller revenue:
NRL - 40.5% (wanting 42.5%)
NZ rugby - 36.5%
Cricket Australia - 30% for men and woman
AFL - 28%
Major league soccer - 26%

When you compare the global EPL at 72% with a local Major league soccer at 26% it highlights how scale can support significantly higher revenue payments.

Of note is the number of players sharing that salary pool. With the Dolphins joining, it means each individual player gets a smaller share. Therefore the increase to each player salary is smaller than the overall increase in funding. There have been many comments about this. Expanding the game (long term revenue growth) has upset the players short term income priority.

Finally, there was a quote from Brendan Smith that the juniors would be better off on the tools. US College players are amateur and make $0 - despite generating 28 x bigger TV revenue than the entire NRL…

Great post.

Also their high earning career allows them enough time to study at the same time. A lot of players have earned degrees whist playing NRL and earning big money. Normal people have to get into huge debt to get a degree.

Usman Khawaja from the Australian Cricket players association union has backed the RLPA. The significance of this is that the media are now reporting these stories of which celebrity is backing which side and this juncture is a new milestone in the process.

RLPA has become a union. Good on them, they are in a unique situation in their chosen sport where their careers can be finished in an instant. They aren’t paid a pittance in relation to American and European sportsman, though their countries are on a far larger scale.
