Based on how I read the tea leaves and the articles I have read "floating a lock out" means a thinly veiled threat through the media to the RLPA that a lock out is coming unless they cave now.

The RLPA are playing for keeps in this negotiation.

I speculate based on other feet dragging actions they have done that they want to lose about a third of the season and then have management cave in.
They (RLPA) are delaying progress as much as possible to ensure this isn't resolved at all.
for example "we are not presenting managements offer to the players because it is christmas holidays in two days". etc etc
I suspect the RLPA has some case studies where a sports union in another sport like the NBA etc held out through a lock out and then the NBA caved.
Read the tenor of all the RLPA statements: unreasonable pie in the sky in requests that even they know are ridiculous, all in the name of making the negotiations impossible to solve.
These negotiations started 14 months agio, If they were going to be solved by talking they would be solved already,.

Yes, the possibility of a lockout is very much your opinion.

In my opinion there is zero chance of it happening. The NRL is not going to cut off the amount it generates from the game, and put its broadcasting deal at risk because of it. The players are not going to forego their livelihood and start competing in thumb twiddle competitions to buy bread for their kids. Did we not just see this during covid where both parties were so desperate to keep the game going during lockdowns where they played in empty stadiums and in bubbles?

RLPA will always get more out of this than they went in there with. Question is how much more control the NRL gives away. Can see both perspectives.

To add to this. The RLPA does not just represent the super stars who will end up with millions once their career ends. There are guys who may only play for limited years who end up with a broken body and not much money at the end of it. Kudos for the RPLA for getting everything they can.

(Ftr I never played nrl but I do have a badly broken body from rugby league- and wouldn’t change a thing…)

Isn’t it the nrl who fund the players association anyway?
Tbf I don’t think the players are being greedy- I think the vast majority would be more than happy with the deal- it’s just the rlpa who are trying to squeeze more and more out of it (which is their job tbf) but it’s starting to wear a bit thin and I wonder how in touch with the players Clint newton really is- remember he’s not some battler born in west Sydney or south Auckland- he’s the son of Australian royalty- his dad was one of their greatest ever golfers.

I’d have to agree with tajhay tho there’s very little chance of a lockout so I’m not too worried- it’ll get sorted.

Sounds like a lack of respect for the poor photographer who was only told after he got there!

Seems like poor and disjointed communication from the playing group if the Sharks players, off their own back, decided to boycott the NRL without a wider player group announcement.

I don't know - I have no knowledge of the timing of a potential lockout.
If I were a betting person I think things are coming together for something right around the time of the All stars game. It will be touch and go if it goes ahead.

We could see a lock out as soon as two weeks from now.

The union wants a lock out or strike and they believe it suits there purposes as they believe the NRL will be unwilling to go without the TV revenue stream for very long.

From googling the Internet the last lockout/strike was in the NBA. Management caved in after 20 lost games and the players got most of what they wanted at the bargaining table. The NRA will not only be acutely aware of that example but it is likely to be their primary motivation. IMHO

All of the above is just my speculative opinion. What will happen is anybody's guess.

2 years after the game almost went bust; after a huge proposed player pay increase offered; while the countries are suffering a cost of living crisis.

Listening to the interview with CG in the preseason thread it sounds like it’s to do with the retirement side of things so could be warranted until more is known. The silence from vlandys and abdo has been pathetic.
