Recruitment 2023 NRL Collective Bargaining Agreement CBA

Christian Welch
""I think with this CBA what gets lost is the non-financial things that we're really working hard for - agreement rights, having trust in the RLPA being able to use the players' money how it wants without having to go to the NRL," he said."

Is the RLPA on crack cocaine?
They want to be given a sum of money by the NRL each year for them to use at their discretion what they will spend it on and how much they will give to the players".
Where do the players even come up with these fucked up ideas.
We are definitely heading for a lock out now.

We are definitely heading for a lock out now.
How did you come to that conclusion when even your quoted article clearly states:

The chance of an NRL lockout has been floated, although the RLPA have stated industrial action against the NRL will only be taken as a last resort.

There is a vast difference between the words "definitely" and "last resort".

Last resort is what the RLPA are saying while the NRL are "floating" a lock out.

Based on how I read the tea leaves and the articles I have read "floating a lock out" means a thinly veiled threat through the media to the RLPA that a lock out is coming unless they cave now.
We are in the final throes before a lock out
I say definitely a lock out because in another article the union said to their members "we must hold the line under pressure".
The union is ready for a lock out based on that comment.
And the NRL has given a warning now,
I should have said in my opinion. In my opinion we are definitely heading for a lock out.

Industrial action might be a last resort for the players eg a players strike but the NRL are not regarding action as a last resort. NRL could move as quick as two weeks from now,

It’s all a big game of chicken but everyone still is committed to playing footy.

The RLPA are playing for keeps in this negotiation.

I speculate based on other feet dragging actions they have done that they want to lose about a third of the season and then have management cave in.
They (RLPA) are delaying progress as much as possible to ensure this isn't resolved at all.
for example "we are not presenting managements offer to the players because it is christmas holidays in two days". etc etc
I suspect the RLPA has some case studies where a sports union in another sport like the NBA etc held out through a lock out and then the NBA caved.
Read the tenor of all the RLPA statements: unreasonable pie in the sky in requests that even they know are ridiculous, all in the name of making the negotiations impossible to solve.
These negotiations started 14 months agio, If they were going to be solved by talking they would be solved already,.

Yes, the possibility of a lockout is very much your opinion.

In my opinion there is zero chance of it happening. The NRL is not going to cut off the amount it generates from the game, and put its broadcasting deal at risk because of it. The players are not going to forego their livelihood and start competing in thumb twiddle competitions to buy bread for their kids. Did we not just see this during covid where both parties were so desperate to keep the game going during lockdowns where they played in empty stadiums and in bubbles?

RLPA will always get more out of this than they went in there with. Question is how much more control the NRL gives away. Can see both perspectives.

To add to this. The RLPA does not just represent the super stars who will end up with millions once their career ends. There are guys who may only play for limited years who end up with a broken body and not much money at the end of it. Kudos for the RPLA for getting everything they can.

Shit didn’t realize they were representing me too- well that changes everything- fark the grass roots stuff- I want a pension!
(Ftr I never played nrl but I do have a badly broken body from rugby league- and wouldn’t change a thing…)

Isn’t it the nrl who fund the players association anyway?
Tbf I don’t think the players are being greedy- I think the vast majority would be more than happy with the deal- it’s just the rlpa who are trying to squeeze more and more out of it (which is their job tbf) but it’s starting to wear a bit thin and I wonder how in touch with the players Clint newton really is- remember he’s not some battler born in west Sydney or south Auckland- he’s the son of Australian royalty- his dad was one of their greatest ever golfers.

I’d have to agree with tajhay tho there’s very little chance of a lockout so I’m not too worried- it’ll get sorted.

Here's how it goes:

RLPA: I want V!
NRL: You're getting P!
RLPA: I'd like U.
NRL: You're getting Q!
RLPA: Please may I have T?
NRL: You're getting R because you're so polite.
RLPA: Surely a handsome man like you could give a girl an S?
NRL: I only give Ss to pretty girls. Which you most certainly are!

NRL players are reportedly set to boycott the competition’s official launch and all promotional activity in a protest against the organisation’s delays in finalising the new collective bargaining agreement.

Sounds like a lack of respect for the poor photographer who was only told after he got there!

Seems like poor and disjointed communication from the playing group if the Sharks players, off their own back, decided to boycott the NRL without a wider player group announcement.

What's your thoughts on All stars in Vegas? Surely that'll still go ahead
I don't know - I have no knowledge of the timing of a potential lockout.
If I were a betting person I think things are coming together for something right around the time of the All stars game. It will be touch and go if it goes ahead.

We could see a lock out as soon as two weeks from now.

The union wants a lock out or strike and they believe it suits there purposes as they believe the NRL will be unwilling to go without the TV revenue stream for very long.

From googling the Internet the last lockout/strike was in the NBA. Management caved in after 20 lost games and the players got most of what they wanted at the bargaining table. The NR:pA will not only be acutely aware of that example but it is likely to be their primary motivation. IMHO

All of the above is just my speculative opinion. What will happen is anybody's guess.

Has there ever been a strike/ lockout in Nz/ Australia pro sport?

2 years after the game almost went bust; after a huge proposed player pay increase offered; while the countries are suffering a cost of living crisis.

Greed.

If the players are stupid enough to push for it, the public will turn against them viciously when the media gets into them.

Listening to the interview with CG in the preseason thread it sounds like it’s to do with the retirement side of things so could be warranted until more is known. The silence from vlandys and abdo has been pathetic.
