2023 NRL Collective Bargaining Agreement

Latest on cba which needs to be resolved before any further signings

NRL powerbrokers and the Rugby League Players’ Association are yet to finalise the collective bargaining agreement — with both the salary cap for next season and the minimum wage for players yet to be finalised.

The cap is reportedly expected to rise by about $1.2 million to $10.5 million for next season, but those funds could be taken up by minimum wage deals.

As it stands, the minimum salary for a top 30 player is $80,000 but the RLPA is pushing for an increase to $150,000 — meaning that $1.2 million is reduced significantly by those upgrades.

Damn that’s good money. Expect an influx of young Brits trying to crack the NRL earlier then.

That’s a mid range salary over there.

Usually the guys ranked 27th to 30th either don’t play first grade at all or get one or two games. The owners will never agree to give such fringe players $150 000
If the players are demanding that then this negotiation has a long way to go

and only gets longer as days drag on

In North America nhl they once lost most of the season as they couldn’t get the deal done before opening day
We may not get this resolved before opening day if the players association wants to double the minimum wage
Once the minimum wage goes up those higher up the food chain may want more comparative compensation to reflect their market worth vs s fringe player. The owners will know this and won’t be keen to give in.
Thank goodness Vlandys is leading the negotiations, gives me hope we won’t end up with a lock out

Doesn't the NRL provide clubs with a grant which essentially covers the salary cap? Is the clubs' frustration that marquee players feel their worth is greater now if the fringe player contracts are increased? Haven't been following this but a similar grievance/effect occurred the last time..

If the players want a bigger slice of the pie, means other parts of the game won't have the funds I would assume. I support the players raising the minimum wage 100%. Although doubling it seems over the top - Would have thought a jump to $110k-$120k would be a bit more reasonable. Stalling the NRL seasons is biting the hand that feeds, would be pissed if that happened.

Clint Newtown sounds like a cock to be fair, and with large input of DCE and Josh Hodgson, doesn't give me the greatest confidence this will get sorted sometime soon. Vlandy's doesn't back down.

Surely not the case....martyr Harry Grant was only concerned for those players earning less than himself when he came out publicly critisising the current set up...

Salary cap is the biggest issue they are working through but there are also a lot of other things the players are pushing for which is holding things up. The players are still mad about the 6 again rule and the high shot crackdown. Players are trying to get the NRL to agree not to change rule without their permission etc. I can’t blame the NRL for not just giving in, no other workplace do the employees have that much power.

I’ve been involved with a couple of collective bargaining agreements (or EBAs) here in Australia.
Firstly as a representative for the employees and later as part of Management so seen both sides of the fence.
From what I’ve read about this one I think the players have some points- the minimum wage is too low and the growth of the salary cap should be in line with the growth of the NRLs revenue growth- which it isn’t under the new proposal.
However, I also have some concerns- I don’t like that they’re insisting they have more say in how off field incidents are dealt with- it’s really not their place. Also they’re asking for match payments for finals games of around $10,000- that means an extra $40,000 per player if your side makes the the GF. That’s only going to be more of a carrot for players to join the stronger clubs- corrupting the salary cap and increasing the gap between the haves and have nots.
I don’t know all the details tbf but from my limited understanding it does seem the players association are being a bit greedy/ stubborn and need to remember it’s a privilege to be an nrl player- I would’ve given my right nut for that opportunity.

How do they mechanics of arranging the talks work ?

With a CBA do you meet every day until you solve it ?
Or is it more meet once a week or every couple of weeks so that each side can consider the new requests before responding and also provide any information or numbers the other side wants
And if it is every week or two how hard are these sessions to schedule
Ie finding a time in Vlandys calendar would be hard

Well I can only speak for the ones I’ve been involved in but we were meeting every couple of weeks.
Basically the company presents an initial agreement- based loosely around award rates- it needs to be ticked off on first by the fair work commission (I think it’s called) so it’s not gonna be anything too outrageous, then it’s presented to the employees- it’s the company’s responsibility to make sure every employee receives a copy- from there the employees nominate a group of representatives (in this case the players association) to represent their best interest’s.
There will be a soft close off date for the reps to reply with any alterations they would like.
That will then be looked at by the company and a new offer made.
Both times I’ve been involved this process was carried out 3 time’s until agreement was reached.
Once both parties agreed it was then put back to the employees to vote on (not sure if this one works the same- I’d assume it does but they haven’t even got to that point yet).
In my experience both times it passed and I’d imagine if the players association give it the tick of approval the players will follow suit.

Agree with everything you say up to the very last part of your 2nd last sentence. Maybe it's a privilege to have a comp to play in but it's a lot of hard work for the majority of players to get there and for the limited time they have, to make what is stuff all over time (think yankee NFL NBA etc) where longterm brain damage, multiple joint, cartilage & skeletal injury per player (more than your average well-paying job?), sometimes paralysis, and so on, and yes even their nuts, is often a by-product of having the 'privilege' to play NRL and give us all so much pleasure and entertainmen...I think it's more than reasonable that players get their fair share of the monetary rewards of the game. But as you say re the finals teams stacking the playerrs monies to be up there year in and year out is not the go.

Hey I was just wanting to clarify, with your inside knowledge, are we waiting to see what the salary cap is before we officially sign any of these players?

And, just wanting to double check, we're looking at ONE current kiwi international?

There's been so much said in the last few days, and so many taking the piss (me included) that I actually don't know what the current hopes are from all of this
