How was Pompey?Few notes from being there.
Atmosphere was great, nice reward for our māori league community to get something like this. It’s no secret Māori and Pacific people carry the game here and provide a big player base for the NRL, but we don’t always get much top level games back for it.
Our spine just lacked the same class.
Not enough polish on the end of sets, Turner tended to run his outsides out of space playing too laterally, and Hayze looked like he was maybe trying too hard in front of his home town crowd.
Nicho Hynes is class. The hunger to get on ball and own the game, playing both sides of the ruck, the way he quickly assesses numbers and organises his outsides, just a class operator.
The way he and Cody could adjust on the fly is superb. Cody set at first receiver with Latrell set to roll behind an edge lead, Nicho runs over and into the first receiver spot, Cody adjusts straight into the roll action with Latrell adjusting accordingly. All of sudden our edge looking up at a two man overlap. All communicated in no time, through a few glances and shorthand comms.
Also glad to be there because I couldn’t think of anything worse than listening to Greg Alexander and Steve Roach call a Māori vs Indigenous game.
Is this the way the Warriors are going to play this year?Few notes from being there.

Hell Yes Wrighty that'd be awesome!Next time should give it to Ruatoria IMO.
Mclean Park will suffice, just down the Road.It would be great to do something for the regions along the east coast (i.e. Ruatoria), however there just isn't an adequate stadium in Gisborne to host the game. Closest that would be realistic is McLean Park in Napier.
I have a lot to say on this topic so buckle up and grab some biscuits while you read,How was Pompey?
Good summary of his efforts in the weekend. I feel the same as you.I have a lot to say on this topic so buckle up and grab some biscuits while you read,
He was below average defensively
6 tackles made 2 missed 2 ineffective for tackle ratio 60%
On the plus he had 5 tackle breaks which placed him 2nd on the Maori behind Preston Riki with 8
Pompey had 9 runs for 72 metres and 32 post contact metres
He had 12 receipts and 4 passes for a pass ratio of 0.44 Jess Arthurs ratio was 0.11
Pompey is 101 kgs 24 years old and 190cms or 6 foot 3
He was not a factor in the game either from being a liability point of view or as an asset. Most of the other players on the field showed better than him. But he did not look glaringly out of place and bear in mind it was an all star game and a level up from an NRL match in intensity with both cultures wanting to win. For reference Latrell didn't stand out either such was the standard of play.
He did get 32 post contact metres but largely he couldn't impress beyond the line of advantage as the tackling had stiff shoulders and wouldn;'t give an inch to Pompey. Often he melted at the point of collision. Again the tackling was strong though.
My overall impression of Pompey is that he is nearly NRL standard...he has had a choppy start to his Warriors career largely playing for a continuously losing side. Common sense says you learn things from a loss, my experience from my cricket career is that you learn far more from a victory. And he has had scant few of those.
I think he is a really really good player who needs to be part of a winning team to develop to his potential and if he gets game time this year we may see a new Adam Pompey who goes on a virtuous cycle of peak to peak experiences.
He has a long way to go but I like and rate him more than Berry. And even Arthars due to his physical dimensions and defence which is usually solid.
