This isn't true. Kiwis' fucking LOVE winners. A successful Warriors team would make the NRL pretty popular in NZ. I know a lot of people who just tuned out after a while due to the Warriors continued mediocrity. They used to watch the non NZ games too and play NRL fantasy. Now nothing.

The Warriors only have control of 12 games. There are either cash incentives or an existing agreement for Magic Round. We'd obviously prefer to be an away team from a fan pov, but you cant begrudge the club for chasing the cash.
That leaves 11 left in the Warriors control.
Prior to determining how to set out their remaining 11 home games, the Warriors and their fans have been hearing for the last 2 years how much they had done to keep the game alive and would be rewarded with extra NZ games, a whole season in NZ, a magic round in Auckland, 3 points per win etc. etc.
This was going to be amazing. 11 games at MSS, another 5+ games around the country. League everywhere.
Now that push has come to shove, the Warriors now know that the Aussies were full of shit.
Not many, if any other clubs are going to bring their home games to NZ. The fans in Dunedin that had high hopes of an NRL match in their city? Tough Shit. The fans in Christchurch that had their hopes up? Tough Shit. Hamilton? Wellington? The thousands of fans within driving distance of these cities? Tough Shit.
To his credit (for once) Cameron George has been pressuring every club and the NRL, both privately and in the media, asking for something.. anything.. for 2023.
They've all said "yeah, nah, thanks though"
So what should the Warriors do knowing that? Keep 11 games at MSS and say tough shit to their fans around NZ too?
No. It looks like the Warriors are doing it all by themselves and taking a game to (likely) Wellington and Christchurch.
MSS is still getting 9 games. As someone else pointed out, its the same number we were getting in 2020. But to ensure the MS Faithful aren't getting a rough deal, members only have to pay for 3. Other clubs/codes have also been through covid and aren't giving such a substantial rollover.
So the Warriors did not agree to play Zero away games around NZ in 2023. They did not agree to reignite the game in NZ all by themselves.
There are many things our club does terribly, but this isn't one of them. The Warriors have been served a shit sandwich by the NRL and are doing their best to not completely disappoint the Warriors fans outside of Auckland.
Same as every other idea, Cameron spruiking that the NRL knew they owed us bigtime and, boy, it was going to be great in 2023 when they showed us the luuurve.
The Warriors have always been the tail happy to wag away. The NRL has always been the stupid, ugly, snarly inbred mutt that every so often tries to nip at the tail.
And the tail can't survive without the dog.
Why should any team, who themselves have been to a certain extent in the financial shit, bring a home game to Auckland, or worse, outside Auckland where I honestly don't think they'd get a crowd anything like what they'd get at home? The "thousands of fans outside Auckland" stuff hasn't ever really been shown by the crowds that have turned up to Warriors games outside Auckland especially when you consider a fair number of that crowd would have come down from Auckland. Auckland is New Zealand's biggest city, so logically has the highest number of Warriors fans and as far as the Warriors club are concerned, most of them are part of the Wheredafuckarday tribe on game day. Maybe if we filled out MSS on a regular basis, showing the love in Auckland, they might think it worth their time to go to Wellington etc,
You're right about the fair weather friendship but actually my argument was more "the Warriors/NRL growing the game in New Zealand" as in strengthening the game outside Auckland rather than the Warriors/NRL taking games outside Auckland.

Since 2015 the Warriors have played 8 games outside of Auckland & these games have had an average attendance of just a little over 14,000. Not hard to see why teams aren't rushing over

I feel like the second best scenario if we aren't getting teams to take games against us here would be a second magic round over here, in fact, it's probably the best option from an NRL perspective.
It wouldn't have much of a competitive advantage for us but the NRL can then toot their own horn and say they game NZ an extra 7 games of footy to go to.
And with half of the teams having to give up a home game to play in Brisbane, they could even it out so all the 'Away' teams at Magic Round have a 'Home' game in the second Magic Round; it also means that the team that gets the bye for the Brisbane one does get to play in a Magic Round at some point.
The Tigers v Storm/Wariors vs Storm double header back in 2018 shows that people would show up non-Warriors games but unfortunately the NRL is going to NRL aren't they..

Cameron Geroge was on the radio (NewsTalkZB) yesterday morning around 7:15. Not a long interview about 2-5 minutes.
He said he was still trying to organise more games here. Might be still a chance but could also be the political answer to give.
He did say the NRL should of been organising the thank you for the last few years. I suspected when it was first discussed about an entire season here it would be "too hard" clubs will think of themselves and not want to give up a home game and add travel. The NRL could show leadership but it would end up the tail wagging the dog and the clubs doing their own thing.
We had big talk from Bellamy. Will the Storm give up the lucrative ANZAC Day game for one year? Yeah right.
Our guys needed to play to get paid. There may have been some percentage paid if they didn't continue in 2020. However you have to wonder if there isn't anything in return would the club do this all again if another pandemic hit? Even with the same CEO or a new one the question would have to be asked well you didn't do much in return last time.

As a member I personally love it when they do it, because then we might get a 20k+ crowd. Heck, I’d even pay an extra $20 per game to guarantee a full house.
The benefit of being a member, other than cheaper (than regular) tickets, is you can lock in premium seats on halfway - the majority of these cheap tickets will be for the nose bleeds and southern stand.
