PREVIEW | Georgia Hale Cup (U17 Girls)

REPRESENTATIVE

125106 wo

The U17 Georgia Hale Cup begins this Saturday with both Auckland teams heading out of town for their opening games. This is the inaugural year for the tournament, and we’re excited to launch this competition to give girls an opportunity to continue to shine on the representative stage early in the season.

The competition is made up of four teams. Two of these teams are Auckland representative teams, Auckland Blue and Auckland White. These teams were picked based off the best U17 Girls from a trial held in January. The Final will be played with the Shaun Johnson and Dean Bell competitions on the 1st of April.

Georgia Hale started her Rugby League career in Auckland, playing for the Richmond Roses. Georgia also represented her country for Tag and Touch Football as a junior before giving League a go. Georgia’s rise to professional Rugby League began early, first cracking it in 2014 representing New Zealand in a 3-game series at the NRL Auckland 9’s competition. In 2015 Georgia made her test debut for the Kiwi Ferns coming off the bench. In 2016, she was named Player of the Match in the Kiwi Ferns ANZAC Test win over the Jillaroos.

Georgia was a part of the inaugural NRL Women’s season representing the New Zealand Warriors. In her debut she played halfback in the Warriors 10-4 win over the Sydney Roosters. In 2021, Georgia made the jump across the ditch to play with Gold Coast Titans. For the 2023 season Georgia has signed on with English side Leeds Rhinos in hopes of trying to make her mark on the Women’s game in the Northern Hemisphere.

Georgia is not only a star on the field. She is an exemplary role model off the field, winning the Young New Zealander of the year award in 2020 for her work in the community around schools, teaching our Youth how to live a healthier lifestyle. Georgia set up the community initiative “The Great Charity Day” which raised upwards of $120,000 in its first 2 years. Georgia is also involved in several initiatives which help young children, rural communities and the intellectually disabled.

Having Georgia as the face of this Pre-Season competition is an honour and we hope that it inspires our young women in the competition to strive for greatness on and off the field. The first fixtures will be played at grounds outside of Auckland. Round 2 will be played on Saturday the 4th of March and will be live streamed through the Auckland Rugby League YouTube Channel thanks to The StreamShop.

DEVELOPMENT

ARL footy is back for the 2023 season! We kicked off our representative tournaments for our U16 and U18 grades. After a long pre-season our boys were pumped and ready to get stuck in. Cornwall Park played host to four fantastic games of rugby league. All the games were livestreamed and are available to watch on the ARL YouTube channel.

Shaun Johnson Shield (16s) | Game 1: Auckland Red vs Auckland Blue
The opening game of the day saw a battle between a tough Auckland Red forward pack and a star studded Auckland Blue backline. The start of the game was quite sloppy with both sides unable to complete sets early, but both teams got in the rhythm of the game and it made for a close second half. Auckland Blue started very fast in the second half, scoring a couple of early tries. A lack of discipline from the Auckland Red side proved to be costly throughout the second period. Tipene Cooley had an outstanding game, his craftiness out of dummy half created a lot of opportunities to help his side go on and win the game 28-8.

Shaun Johnson Shield (16s) | Game 2: Auckland Black vs Auckland White
The second game of the day saw another fixture of the Shaun Johnson Shield. This was a very close matchup between the two sides early in the game. Ashton Denton-Woodhouse got the first try in spectacular fashion with a one handed grab backing up hooker Zion Sitani. In the second half the 1,9,13 combo took over with Ashton Fraser having some barnstorming runs and a try. Zion Sitani controlled the offence and was solid on defence. Denton-Woodhouse finished the game with a spectacular run away try wrapping up the game 28-8.

DB Cup (18s) | Game 3: Auckland Red vs Auckland Blue
The third game of the day saw the kick off of the Dean Bell Cup. Both teams started off the game in quite a nervous way, trying to find those newly formed links proved difficult early on. This cost the Auckland Blue side in the first 30 minutes and it allowed the Red side to capitalise off those mistakes to build a lead. The tide turned in the second half and the blue side started to complete some sets and put on some spectacular footy. Christian Junior Sikuvea inspired his Blue side back to within two points of Red, but a couple of incomplete sets with 10 minutes to go proved costly and the Red side ran away with the game 22-18.

DB Cup (18s) | Game 4: Auckland Black vs Auckland White
Our final game of the day saw a fantastic match up in what was the game of the day. Both teams started the game hard and fast. Throughout the game it was a battle of the half backs. Rico Toeva-Ward and Ashton Norman Te-Pou. Overall the link play between the Auckland Black side looked smooth for the majority of the game, with a high quality team performance. Which gave them the win. Toeva-Ward took over in the second half and came up with some massive plays which allowed his team to do what they do best and get Auckland Black across the line with a 28-14 win.

Shaun Johnson Shield (16s) | Game 5: Waikato v Coastline
The tournaments went down the line to wrap up the first round of action, starting with the 16s on Sunday. Waikato played host to visitors Coastline at League Park in Ngaruawahia. The two sides had a physical contest, with plenty of big runs and strong defence on show, but it was Waikato who were able to secure the 18-6 win.

DB Cup (18s) | Game 6: Waikato v Coastline
The home side continued the momentum from the 16s with Waikato shooting out to a 18-nil lead in the first half. Coastline got a couple in before the half to try and pull themselves back into the game and head into the break down 22-8. A similar story in the second half, with Waikato grabbing three unanswered tries to extend their lead before Coastline hit back, resulting in a final scoreline of 46-14.

More action is yet to come in Round 2 next weekend. Keep an eye out for the full draw release and the Georgia Hale Cup kicking off in the final weekend of February. All three tournaments wrap up with Grand Finals on April 1st.

Any names here that would be on your watch list?
Thats a lot of names lol. I dont start enquiring about them until they hit the Warriors system. Thats a question for experts like Five&Last Cces Tony Martin Viking ramraider78 . Not sure if our South Island experts can help...

TBH I didnt even read the team lists. Just posted them because I know one day I'll be doing a new player profile and when I search for them in this forum their name might pop up.

Having a look through I see a few of the Warriors juniors in there like Sio Kali, Kaylise-Jesse Fatialofa and Raphael Sio. Im wondering if Leka Halasima and Selu Halasima are the same person or brothers. I swear that kid changed his name a couple times last season. Even Kayliss is now Kaylise with an added hyphen.

Augustino Filipo from Mangere East Hawks is meant to be a bit of a gun. Havent seen him named in a team this year yet but we got him locked up after having a bit of a signing battle with rugby clubs for him.

That Ashton Denton-Woodhouse is signed with the Roosters and has made every age grade rep side he has been eligible for since he started playing. He was one of the kids that played in Brent Webb's Ellerslie team despite living in Papakura.

Got a mate coming over tomorrow who knows his juniors well. If we get bored I'll get him to have a look at the lists...

Ashton is a classy player. He stood out in the first Shaun Johnson round where the games were scrappy IMO.

I don't get to watch a lot of the U16s boys games and can't comment on them but a number of the u15s boys are signed to Sports Vision so playing in the Shaun Johnson Cup is less about making a Warriors u15s or 16s side and more about being in the shop window for other clubs. They couldn't sign with an agent until the beginning of this year as they can only sign in the year they turn 15. I know of one boy being asked to sign on New Years Day and he doesn't turn 15 until August.
