Recruitment 2023/2024 Warriors Recruitment DISCUSSION

From what David Long said on SeNz this morning. Sounds like we are promoting 3 from within our NSW cup squad and signing 1 new player.
I’m picking Taine Tuaupika , Zion Maiuu and Jacob Laban. With Tanner Stowers Smith be added as a development player.
Who is the next hooker in line in our NSW Cup squad? I think we're probably short a third hooker also (unless Jazz/Walker are assumed to fill that role).

I'm not sure of an out & out #9 in there but Eiden Ackland & Michael Sio have some experience at dummy half. Maybe the youngest Sio, Lewis?

I think that would be Michael Sio, but he has played a lot of lock in Q-Cup recently I think.

I had the same thought about getting a third hooker, but looking around, it seems a lot teams have 2 specialist hookers, then a guy or two that can fill in there..

Cowboys: Robson & Granville (Cover from Hampton & Cotter)
Roosters: Smith & Turpin (Cover from Watson & Hutchinson)
Sharks: Brailey & Berrell (Cover from McInnes & Trindall)
Panthers: Kenny & Luke (Cover from Peachey & "Weak Gutted Dog Person")

Mind you, those examples could very well be the top 4 teams this year, so comparing us to them might be a poor choice haha

I think we will be okay without upgrading or recruiting a third hooker and running with Egan & Lussick, with Jazz and Walker filling in as needed, but it wouldn't hurt to get one if there was someone out there that would be worth bringing in. Prop and outside back depth is still a more pressing need imo.

My pick is that Sifakula will get promoted before Zion and Laban do, especially as he looks like exclusively playing middle now

TBH I don't mind this approach.

1) We've very publicly cut guys who didn't meet standards.

2) We're promoting guys from within which based on reason 1 means that they've met those same standards.

3) While we might have to sit back and wait awhile for results, the message is clear to everyone watching that there are genuine opportunities for juniors at the Warriors IF you do what's required.

We'll see how this works out, but for now - no complaints.

There’s 3 hookers they are grooming in the SG ball squad with genuine first grade potential. Expect them to get minutes in NSW cup this season as well.

Hooker is one position I know they won’t be upgrading, despite Otukolo leaving.

We could do a lot worse than Ligi Sao. Interesting to note with regards to the comment on his fitness, when Sao played 30+ minutes at the Warriors we went 6W-2L (2W-0L as a starter). When he was >30 mins we went 7W-11L.

I always though he was underutilized which probably resulted in him trying too hard & forcing some wayward offloads when he did get a crack after long absences from first grade
Thats exactly how I felt about Ligi Sao.
He was a beast at Manly when we bought him but the coach treated him as a back up.

Also thought Chris Satae was a bit underused and prematurely sold.
Had the unfortunate coincidence of coming on usually when we were under the pump and did lots of defensive work.

I wonder if we have looked at any of the PNG boys.

Have we ever had a guy from PNG on the team, ever?

We really should, even if only on a Rezzies or Train and Trial deal, because while they may not light the world on fire, I bet they would train the house down given the opportunity and could really push some of the fringies for a spot.

Meanwhile, Stuff understands Solomon Vasuvulagi, Eiden Ackland and Kalani Going have all been promoted to train with the first grade team after impressing coaches.

The thee players were all signed to be a part of the Warriors’ reserve grade NSW Cup team this year, with the club back in it for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The players will stay with the first grade team for the trial against Wests Tigers at Mt Smart Stadium on February 9.

If they go well during that time, they’ll remain with the top team for the trial against the Storm in Christchurch on February 18.

There is the potential for these players to grab one of the four currently vacant spot on the Warriors’ 30-man NRL roster if they continue to do well.

Since we have all downgraded our expectations for a marquee prop to someone who can do a job……surely there is someone in the super league that fits the bill??
Also there’s some money for next year once lodge has been paid out of the cap, I wonder who or what position they’ll strengthen? Hope there’s not a ridiculous contract thrown at Roger Tuivasa-Sheck to return, would love him back but I understand the tigers are in negotiations and the dolphins are keen too. Wouldn’t be interested in getting into a bidding war over him.

I’m with you

  1. Our club plays in a professional comp, with the same cap as everyone else
  2. We have only one walk-on prop
  3. We have spare slots available
  4. We have released players recently
  5. Prop has for a long time, been our weakness
We should absolutely be in the market for a prop to share Addin Fonua-Blake’s workload. Imagine how effective he’d be if we had enough middles for Addin Fonua-Blake to play an impact role
