Recruitment 2023/2024 Warriors Recruitment DISCUSSION

Come on mate, local boy who has a great attitude and wants to be a Warrior, recommits on likely peanuts.....

Not every signing is going to be top tier like Braydon Williame..
Just extending for the option seems odd to me, would have thought he’s done enough to earn an extension past the option. I don’t think he’s in the clubs plans past next year.

The option was for 2023 tho wasn't it? It looks like we've offered him a new 1 year contract for 2024 tho.

Tbh I thought it was a bit strange, just a 1 yr contract but I think with all the rookies and imports we've brought it's important to have some strong Maori leaders who have been at the club for a while, with Jazz fitting that quite well.

He hasn't done anything to warrant extending.

Should've let him play out 2023 before extending him into 2024..
Nah I disagree - he would only be on max 250-350k. Show me a hearty Maori who wants to play for the Warriors with as much experience as he has, that will do it better than him and cheaper than him.

Also cleaned up his game big time in 2022. Hardly any dumb penalties and errors, played like 5 different positions for us this year and averaged more meters as a prop than everyone else except for Tohu Harris, Lodge and Addin Fonua-Blake.

There are 16 other teams and he was open to approaches for 2024 as of nov 1 (I know you know that but needed to spell it out to make my rebuttal)

Is this the quietest Nov 1 passing ever!?
People get fixated on Nov 1, it’s NEVER a flurry of signings people keep expecting every year.
Pretty sure that’s the date you can start negotiating, club’s blatantly do it before then but you’d think they’d wait a little bit before announcing deals to at least keep up appearances of complying

So where r u playing him? And if it’s as a middle forward why re-sign Jazz?
We must’ve offered walker something to leave Australia- it’s either big overs or a starting spot.

I'm guessing here, but if Ben Murdoch-Masila and Sironen are out at the end of 2023 - dare I say it - we actually look a bit thin experience wise in the backrow...

Outside of Niukore, Tohu Harris, Curran and Barnett, we would have Jazz, Ford and Walker.

Considering we are already dangerously short of props, if Jazz was let go and we had 1 or 2 long term injuries at the same time we would be running with some serious rookieness.

Imo Jazz will be playing as injury cover for backrow and Walker for the next 2 years, or filling in as a 4th prop here and there when required.

Something I often forget to consider is if we let someone go, who are we going to get in to do a better job than them or cheaper than them. I really don't think we could get anyone cheaper with that much experience, maybe a rookie who plays above what's expected but that's extremely unlikely. I also think Jazz probably could have got a better gig somewhere else, but chose to stay here

I might be jumping the gun a bit here but it is interesting looking at how long everyone is signed for, based on ZT. If we assume that Bunty, Ale and Kosi will resign for at least one year (and Shaun Johnson is signed for 2024???) our 2024 squad already has 25 out of the 30 spots locked in. Compared to a team like the Storm who have 15 out of the 30 spots locked in. Maybe we have offered longer deals to players so that they actually come to the Warriors but hopefully that also means we will be looking to sign a marquee player, rather than a whole bunch of signings like 2023.

Here is the breakdown of players in each position for 2024, obviously there is still debate as to who plays where so I have included names. It isn't what I expected, a lot of middle forwards and not many centers/outside backs.

Middle forward - 8 (Afoa, Ale, Addin Fonua-Blake, Barnett, Harris, Kepu, Kepu, Tevaga)
Hooker - 3 (Egan, Lussick, Otukolo)
Second-row - 4 (Curren, Ford, Niukore, Williame)
Halves - 4 (Shaun Johnson, Martin, Metcalf, Volkman)
Centre - 2 (Berry, Vailea)
Outside back - 3 (Kosi, Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak)
Utility - 1 (Walker)

I mean we really have no idea what salary he's on.

He's an undersized prop with pretty poor defensive reads and ill discipline. His ball playing has improved but not enough to start at lock and have a team that actually scores a lot of points.

I just think we've jumped the gun again. I'd run the risk of him signing elsewhere, if it means wanting him to show improvements in key areas in 2023.

His play-style is very high effort but I just don't see a lot of team success.

But again we have no idea what salary he's on. If he's on bench player money or less this all becomes irrelevant. But given the significant role he's had over the past couple years, I wouldn't think that's the case.
