Yeah a lot of what ifs for me...

How close is Zyon to getting a gig with us?
If we release him now do we need to fill his spot in our roster?
Will he even get game time at the Knights?

If everything indicates he won't get game time in the top team with us this year, and we know he will with Knights then I'm all for it

I'd be concerned if we had injuries to a couple of our props later on.
Maybe if there is a provision to recall him.

At the moment he's literally the next cab off the rank for us.

Jazz and Ale are the bench props, then there's Zyon.

Maybe Sifakula before Zyon, but he's been playing all his time as second row or lock this season.

Seems utterly stupid to loan him out.

Our middle depth in our NSW cup squad isn't even that great. Got Baggaley starting there alongside Zyon, who's barely bigger than Rocco Berry. We just pulled Leka Halasima out of our SG ball squad (who's 17 years old) to come off the bench. Then we have uncontracted journeymen James Gavet (who played surprisingly decent tbf) and Pat Vaivai making random appearances out of nowhere.

I too think Zyon should be locked into the top 30. Yes he's got a lot to work on defensively but he should be doing in cup and getting reps with our squad not someone else's.

100% he’s currently playing with other players that can all be brought through together ah la the panthers. The more they play together the better

We just pulled Leka Halasima out of our SG ball squad (who's 17 years old) to come off the bench.

Zion is getting good minutes with the NSW Cup side while playing a key role in the side.

They also don’t seem flush with middles to let a starter leave.
He is rubbing shoulders and training with the first grade side on a daily basis while also developing a playing style of the first grade, critical for when he gets the chance to debut in first grade.
You don’t develop a positive culture and playing style by shopping off one of your most exciting prospects to a club who will be battling for the wooden spoon. That would be putting his development into reverse.

Yeah I dont like it. I think theres a lot to be gained with him playing alongside gavet in reserves- probably a better leader than anyone the knights have.
Should debut and play a handful of 1st grade games this year- its almost the perfect scenario for him- why mess with it?

Have we given up on signing NOS? Surely he’s a target and it’s not like we haven’t pulled off big kiwi signings from Aussie before. We will have the cash I’d say for 700-800k a year. Other players we could look at;
Ieremia
Tuala
Sorensen
Grieg

Ideally we need a FRF and depending on Siro and Curran we may need an edge as well. Even with Sifakula. Only other spot at a pinch would be wing. But wouldn’t want to spend big $$ there.

Swap Thompson with Bullemor. Don't get what people see in Thompson? I'd even rather have Pangai Jr or Ofahanguae over him.

Maybe, but 1 listed was a Tiger . And Ofahengaue, Nofoaluma and Laurie all played cup last week. And at this point none are listed in the 17 this week.
It's likely at least 1 will be going somewhere.

Yep, people like to throw out names like Hynes when off contract. In reality we could offer someone like that $600k a year more and they still wouldn’t come. No point in even suggesting top notch Aussie players (especially spine). If they have Aussie clubs throwing money at them they won’t come here. I’ve accepted that after 28 years.

Yep, people like to throw out names like Hynes when off contract. In reality we could offer someone like that $600k a year more and they still wouldn’t come. No point in even suggesting top notch Aussie players (especially spine). If they have Aussie clubs throwing money at them they won’t come here. I’ve accepted that after 28 years.

If we perform consistently as a club they will. i.e. make the finals for a few years in a row, play tough football etc.

In the last 10 years though, there haven't been many reasons to want to come here.

Granted, they are far and few in between but we have had some big name non Kiwis come here - Price, Hoffman, Addin Fonua-Blake, Tomkins, Barnett, Queensland stars Daine Neilson and Dumanis Lui (tonge in cheek ) as well as our fair share of decent Aussie talent looking for a start - Walsh, Egan, Volkman, Metcalf, Maloney.

The point is, if you don't ask you don't get. Also, silver lining is that if we offer a big contract to someone like Hynes and they don't take it, they can use that as leverage to bump up their asking price so that hopefully overall, it means the team they signed with have to fork out more and hopefully have to shed a player or two to fit them in the cap

Yes Hynes probably wouldn't look at us even if we did offer something substantial, but I just don't see what other options we have recruitment wise other than having a crack at the big names

In my very limited knowledge of Hynes:

• He is not playing for a glamour club (and has already made the call to leave one)
• Both clubs he has played for have been away from home
• Has "lived a life" already, and seems to have a great deal of clarity and maturity
• Has no dependents, so has more ability to move (though very close with his mother)
• Seems like an intelligent guy. In the past this would count against us, but he may see us as a team on the up, and be impressed by a coach like Webster. He has teaching experience and is dating a doctor. We may be able to sell a leadership opportunity to him.
• He is proudly indigenous and we are a club that considers player's cultural values a taonga

Yes, we are very unlikely to secure a player like him. However, I see him as a different kettle of fish to signing a young party/glamour boy that loves the Australian night life.

We reportedly offered him $500k a season and he went to the Sharks for a higher value contract (reportedly 1.8m/3yr.

While not likely, he is definitely the type of guy to put the line in the water for in my eyes.
