Recruitment 2023/2024 Warriors Recruitment DISCUSSION

The salary cap is 11.45mill, devide that by 30 evenly and it's $380k per player.

Dallen on $400k is not an issue imo, I think that's reasonable given his speed, x factor and experience
Fair enough, 400k i could live with, someone like ed would be on 200k you reckon?

The only off-contract guys left are Montoya, Johnson, Pompey and Sironen now.

Montoya should be signed for another year or two now. I don't imagine there will be a long list of suitors for him, but his value is only going to go up from here it seems.

If Johnson can stay at his current form or better, We should re-sign him for another year towards the backend of the season. We won't have to worry about him leaving so we can afford to wait and see if he keeps it up.

I kinda like the idea of upgrading Sironen for Sorensen, and/or Pompey for Hiku assuming we have the cap space (Especially considering Egan will be due a pay rise- extend that mf till the sun explodes please and thank you) to hold us over until Laban and Leiataua are ready. Looking at the available players for next year, there isn't a whole lot out there, and even less so if you think about what players would realistically move here, even Sorensen is a stretch.

I would sign Pompey, unless we got Arthars or Averillo, but also the club is a development club so Berry and Leiataua should overtake Pompey in the next few seasons if the club could cope with Pompey in the meantime.

For me also Zyon Maiuu takes Sironens spot perhaps? We got to start looking inwards, unless it's a position that requires some experience.

I’d be re signing Pompey too, would imagine the long term vision is Berry and Kosi on one side. I think Pompey is more than capable to hold that spot until Berry takes it and Pompey becomes depth but at the same time I think Pompey could get better and better. Maiuu seems to be spending most of his time in nsw cup at prop, perhaps Laban as a second rower would be a better fit to replace Sironen? Really hard as all off contract are deserving of another one at the moment.

While I am the self-proclaimed president of the Jesse Arthars fan club and would love to have him back, I think adding Hiku would propel us to a contending quality backline (provided he doesn't regress a huge amount)

It would also give a 200-game vet for the likes of Rocco (who I admittedly forgot about till you mentioned him), Ali and Villiami to work with for a year and perhaps fight for a spot with the following year.

Like Noitall said, I think Laban is a more appropriate replacement for Sironen than Zyon, but I do like the idea of having Sorensen- he along with Jazz and Walker are (to pull a number out of my ass) 3 of the 5 best bench players in the league, and he brings that premiership-winning experience, that I don't think we have outside of one from Walker when he was still a kid. *oh and one from Tohu Harris, lol

I am weary that both Hiku and Sorensen will be 31 by the start of next year, but if it could buy a year or two more to develop them in Reserve Grade, while also giving us a real boost, I am down for that.

I'm not married to the idea though, I would much rather bring them in while they are maybe a touch raw, than let them hang around for too long and they walk.

Good points, but I'm also not saying zyon is a like for life replacement although he was initially a backrower. I would personally rather these young bucks get in the arena with Tohu Harris, Jazz, Walker, Addin Fonua-Blake, asap to gain experience with these top line players.

Sifakula looks a real talent, and I would rather see him jam it then see Sorenson for 1 season. Sorenson is a typical Ivan Cleary type of no frills player.

We don't have much time with Tohu Harris getting on so hopefully these young forwards are soaking it all up!

Big question is how they change development contracts in the new CBA. Looks like there is pressure to do away with the current rules around waiting till later rounds before being able to play, especially given the new concussion protocols.

Could allow us to keep younger guys on dev contracts longer potentially

I seriously think Webster will look inwards for next year...cant imagine too much recruitment news unless we can snare a clear upgrade on a mid tier player such as Sironen. We will obviously need to upgrade a couple of young guys from development contracts, resign Montoya, and potentially Shaun Johnson, extend Egan, Tohu Harris and Jazz prior to November. Then theres Ford, Curran and Metcalf who are available to negotiate for 2025 in November also.

Not going back to the hiku well again are we? already tried that twice- time to move on- we have some fantastic young centers.
we do have some fantastic centre's but we don't have any elite centres. Center is one of our weakest spots. I wouldn't resign Pompey and would use his spot to upgrade Ali and then go after someone more experienced. Hiku would be great to bring back to the club for a year.

We already have Williame in that role.

Yeah but there's no way we can go into next year with Williame and 2 guys with under 20 games and Ali. Deffo need a stop gap atleast for nek year. Maybe we keep Pompey, maybe we get someone like Herbert or Hiku back, won't break the bank and offers a bit of something.

Might be wishful thinking but surely 2 of Vailea, Berry and Ali will be 30-50 games in to their career and ready to go week in/week out from 2025.
