Love this post. With all the talk of the desperate need of someone with a massive boot, does anyone know why our halves almost exclusively seem to be so poor in this area?
Chanel Harris-Tavita, Greeny, Niko, Lino, Hingano, even Shaun Johnson when he was kicking for touch on penalties wouldn't get more than 20m most of the time.
Other teams all seem to have at least one bloke who can put in an enormous torpedo for their chasers to attack, or who can boot it from their own 20 way down the other end, whereas our halves look like they're playing force-back at a family BBQ.
Didn't someone on here try and say it was because they all had tight hamstrings or some other far-fetched reason...?
This is my oldest hairy old chestnuts.
It is a fundamental not seen on NZ RL fields any more, so why should it magically appear on the NRL field when Stacy, Gene, Lance, Motu, Carlos, Tui, Mason, Benji, debut in the NRL?
A lost generation.
League suffered a catastrophic collapse of it's old school coaches, the old ones died out, and their school of thinking went with them.
One of the watersheds was the ten meter rule, Under the five system, it was harder to make meters with your running game, you had a kicker or you died.
So recruiters were drawn to quick kids and fancy feet over kickers. This of course had a fatal flaw with the 2002 Roosters side pioneering line speed and super fit players that could get up fast for eighty minutes, and the Storm and their bloody Jiu Jitsu drove the final nail in the Coffin.
The last great Kiwi field Kicker I can think of, didn't even play for the Warriors, he went Newcastle and returned to Coach the Warriors....Tony Kemp....one of our worst coaches....but our best field kicker.
If I am Nathan Brown....I will sit back over the coming break, and ask the trainers to monitor whether Chanel Harris-Tavita is trying to put in the missing ten thousand hours of field kicking after training.
I am sure they are already onto that.
What I would be really interested in, is to see if he takes at least ten drop goals on his own initiative.....now that will tell you...what kind of player you have....and whether they are truly the 'future'.
Phil Gould should tell the NZRL to host a juniors annual kicking contest, all contenders welcome.
