With all the talk of the desperate need of someone with a massive boot, does anyone know why our halves almost exclusively seem to be so poor in this area?

Chanel Harris-Tavita, Greeny, Niko, Lino, Hingano, even Shaun Johnson when he was kicking for touch on penalties wouldn't get more than 20m most of the time.

Other teams all seem to have at least one bloke who can put in an enormous torpedo for their chasers to attack, or who can boot it from their own 20 way down the other end, whereas our halves look like they're playing force-back at a family BBQ.

Didn't someone on here try and say it was because they all had tight hamstrings or some other far-fetched reason...?
Love this post.

This is my oldest hairy old chestnuts.

It is a fundamental not seen on NZ RL fields any more, so why should it magically appear on the NRL field when Stacy, Gene, Lance, Motu, Carlos, Tui, Mason, Benji, debut in the NRL?

A lost generation.

League suffered a catastrophic collapse of it's old school coaches, the old ones died out, and their school of thinking went with them.

One of the watersheds was the ten meter rule, Under the five system, it was harder to make meters with your running game, you had a kicker or you died.

So recruiters were drawn to quick kids and fancy feet over kickers. This of course had a fatal flaw with the 2002 Roosters side pioneering line speed and super fit players that could get up fast for eighty minutes, and the Storm and their bloody Jiu Jitsu drove the final nail in the Coffin.

The last great Kiwi field Kicker I can think of, didn't even play for the Warriors, he went Newcastle and returned to Coach the Warriors....Tony Kemp....one of our worst coaches....but our best field kicker.

If I am Nathan Brown....I will sit back over the coming break, and ask the trainers to monitor whether Chanel Harris-Tavita is trying to put in the missing ten thousand hours of field kicking after training.

I am sure they are already onto that.

What I would be really interested in, is to see if he takes at least ten drop goals on his own initiative.....now that will tell you...what kind of player you have....and whether they are truly the 'future'.

Phil Gould should tell the NZRL to host a juniors annual kicking contest, all contenders welcome.

One thousand dollar prize to the kid who can hit four forty twenties in a row.

Free Reece Walsh signed T shirt for any kid who can hit a forty twenty period.

We actually have one in Walsh but I think Brownie doesn't want to add that to his game yet

I have posted on here before that we should look for an ex afl player to teach kicking to our halves. Plenty of those guys in Oz

Let the conspiracy theories start. Not saying that Jazz didn`t deserve getting put on report, just that the collective team penalty wasn`t justified by the judicial ruling on the tackle. It cost the team 2 points I think. Matt Cecchin definitely has something against the Warriors.
Try the NRL as a whole. There remains an element within the game at the highest levels that are still against the '95 expansion, and you'll also find that of all of those expansion teams, we recieved the least assistance by a mile, including being forced (i.e, no alternative) into folding in 2000 with no assistance from the NRL in honouring player contracts at the time (Watson wasn't budging at the time, either).
Unprecedented in the games history. So to some our continued existence is a big middle finger, particularly in Sydney. How far that actually translates to on-field results is potentially enormous, like death by 1000 papercuts type shit.

Have you seen how many times Moses, Brooks, Shaun Johnson, Keary, Norman, Hunt etc have missed point blank droppies? If you havent then you dont watch a lot of footy games. 10 out of 10 you are kidding right? Have you seen "legends" doing that pass through the hole drill? They miss almost every time!! It is not as easy as you maybe think it is.

No, you are missing the point mr cool and others are saying.

They are saying Chanel Harris-Tavita sucks and every other half in the nrl is better and can do everything he can but do it 10 times out of 10.

Also his relative inexperience and young age does not mean anything because "hes had plenty of time and opportunities"

Hes not perfect is what they mean so next wonder kid up apparently we have many of those waiting in the wings. Also every other goos half in the comp are lining up to join us so theres no need to develope our own players.

Dunno though bro, different type of kicking, different type of ball. I'm a 47yo pin legged weakling and I can kick an AFL ball from the circle into goal on the full if I strike it right. Never been close with a league ball...

Yeah understand mate. Balls are slightly different but those AFL guys are much better kickers than our guys. Many Australian guys have a AFL background

The damage was done during the tackle set. They should have been setting up for that kick. He missed, but it was a terrific goal that won the game for the Cowboys.
It was a foot away from being a two point field goal

Watch number 9s at NPC level kick it out 20M+ down field from a ruck on their 1M line. It's not an NZ thing but it is absolutely a warriors thing. Just boggles my mind when they kick it 10M on a penalty, just take the quick tap if that's all you can manage.

Something wrong here. As kiwi kids we are all brought up kicking the ball and passing the ball. Basis of all the backyard and park footie games in this country of any code including soccer.

So, if kiwi kids can kick a ball at an early age why is it that we seem to lack this talent at senior level?

Answer is simple, it's not encouraged in league nor is it regarded as a necessary talent like in Union or Soccer. In league we love a stepper or someone who "goes through the front door"

Every back in Union and even the odd loose forward is expected to be able to kick, in Soccer it's everything.

In League it's regarded as a nice to have but not absolutely necessary even though teams that have a decent kicker do well.

The 2 yard penalty kick out bugs the shit out of me, field position is one of the big three along with pace and possession.

Good to see our attacking shape make the Gameplan at least.

I never imagined we’d make one of Seibold’s segments this year on attack. We’re usually on the receiving end with teams running through our defenders lol

No surprise Reece Walsh was heavily involved with a classy try assist.

Seb’s would make a great game analyst working for us somewhere down the track? Make it happen Gus/Brownie and co..

I know things didn't go well at the Broncos for Seibold but I've seen some of his analysis and have enjoyed it. Like Elliott when he used to do it.

It helps you learn about the modern game, things the coaches and players are looking at.

I'd prefer more of this during game coverage instead of commentator complaining about referring or rules. Focus on the players skills or how the defense was beaten.

Be a hard sell to get the AFL to do a league team any favours, they hate the sport with a passion and are actively trying to replace it.
Coops is right, the AFL balls are a lot softer and lighter than a rugby ball. Also the tactical kicking is quite different, mostly it’s 15odd meter chips for marks or bombs into the 50 which most of the skill is on the player going for a mark. There’s not a huge amount of distance kicking, certainly not for space. The sport is almost netball like kick passing down the field before lining up a shot

Gotta disagree .AFL balls are about the same NRL balls. If anything slightly heavier. However more pointed is about the only difference .15-20 metre chips are perfect for a flying winger if accurate. NFL actually love ex AFL players to be their dedicated kickers to punt the ball way the hell down field & out of trouble And finally I had a lot to do with Aussie rules while living on the Gold Coast & I could easily get a few ex AFL players on the bus for a few nights at the Terrigal resort as long as the bar was stocked with VB.I am sure theres ex AFL players enjoying retirement on the Central Coast who would happily lend a hand
