General 2021 NRL Draw NZ Warriors

Nobody is reading this thread right now.
I like this as our Game 1
Home game vs Titans
Titans will come into this with confidence
A win for us sets us up nicely for the opening rounds
Should be a nice running game by both sides as long as our attack clicks, it’s set for a perfect start

So....unless the Titans have booked stays in M.I.Q....

Forget Auckland.

No quarantine no entry. I thought that would have been pretty clear to people by now.

The labour Govt will help the Warriors on this one.

Then it is entirely up to whether the Titans want to interrupt thier preseason and go way out of their way.

If were them I would refuse.

I wouldn't put much on Auckland being listed. It's either hopefull or an oversight.

Also could be a place holder seeing as where we will be based next year is still up in the air.

Even with the vaccine announcements we haven't received any yet and the government is still meeting around how what percentage of people would need to be vaccinated before they open the borders. There was also a headline that the borders could be shut for another 18 months. Sure Australia could be different but still a bit hopeful at this stage.

Eighteen months is a sensible conservative guess as far as the border goes.

We are pretty well placed to get Vaccines early compared to other countries, there are two good options coming online with Pfizer and the cheaper easier to distribute Jansen pharmaceuticals Vaccine.

The Pfizer Vaccine with its special cool storage requirements and a pre order of Seven hundred and fifty thousand treatments (We have ordered twice that amount of Vaccine because you need two jabs) would be used to cover out essential workers and some of the elderly population.

The Jansen order will be much larger and targeted at the bulk of the population (it is cheaper, easier to store, and is behind the Pfizer Jab in the approval process).

That should see good coverage of the vulnerable within six months to a year max, and the mass roll out for four million people thereafter could be sorted in 12 months ergo eighteen in total is a good guess.

But from a League fan pov, if you are hoping for quicker resolution, then it is possible that a transtasman bubble could open next season, based on the fact the Australia can manufacture the AstraZeneca Oxford Vaccine, they have the permissions to do it locally and therefore could be covid covered, theoretically before the season ends....but I wouldn’t bank on it....since you would still need Aussie to eradicate the Virus through a combination of Vacination and border controls.

Can see Auckland maybe being used, would only require Titans to Quarantine and then both teams could go to Aus and play the next week

Well, so much for thanking the boys for their sacrifices last year. First 2 games at home...highly likely not to be played in NZ, and 12th home game a 'give-away' yet again as part of the Magic Round. What the hell is going on?

Why could we not have all of our 'away' games during the first half of the season, allowing a bit more time to get over this damn global nuisance.

And you can bet your boots that Comrade Jazzie will keep the borders closed and the folks suppressed for as long as humanly possible before riots erupt. And any managed (ha) quarantine retained at 14 days for as long as possible to dissuade any folks traveling.

New Zealand Warriors 2021 draw snapshot

Here is all you need to know about the Warriors' 2021 Telstra Premiership draw.

The Lowdown

Teams they play twice

Titans, Knights, Raiders, Sea Eagles, Dragons, Storm, Cowboys, Wests Tigers, Sharks.

Teams they play once

Roosters, Eels, Panthers, Rabbitohs, Bulldogs, Broncos.

Day-by-day breakdown

Thursday - 0, Friday - 7, Saturday - 5, Sunday - 12.

Turnarounds

5 days – 3, 6 days – 4, 7+ days – 16

Kick-off

The Warriors will start their campaign against the Titans at Mt Smart Stadium, where they've won nine of 12 clashes at home between the two sides, followed by another home game hosting the Knights six days later. The Raiders and Roosters (both away) complete a tough first month.

Five key match-ups

Knights (Round 2, Mt Smart Stadium; Round 15, McDonald Jones Stadium): Warriors coach Nathan Brown will get his first chance at coaching against the side he practically put together before he departed the Knights in 2018.
The Warriors embarrassed Newcastle 36-6 in Tamworth the last time the sides met with Roger Tuivasa-Sheck making a mockery of the Knights' goal-line defence. Blake Green's unlikely to be fit in round two for his first game against his former club but the recipe is there for a great battle.

Storm (Round 7, AAMI Park; Round 14, Mt Smart Stadium): A return to the traditional and emotional Anzac Day clash after a 12-month hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Warriors haven't beaten the defending champions since 2016 and were handed a 50-6 hiding at Kogarah in round 7, 2020 as they struggled to come to grips with being away from their families.

They dug deep to win five of their nine and will relish another crack at Melbourne. Stephen Kearney's return to the Storm as an assistant coach adds some extra spice.
Warriors' top five tries of 2020

Cowboys (Round 8, Mt Smart Stadium; Round 12, Queensland Country Bank Stadium): Warriors players will get their first crack at facing former coach Todd Payten after he knocked back the chance to remain on as head coach in August. While most of the fresh faces in Nathan Brown's line-up had little to do with Payten, he will know several of the players' game inside out.

Eels (Round 10, Suncorp Stadium): Jazz Tevaga v Nathan Brown in the NRL's Magic Round, let's get it on. A couple of rugged forwards looking to get one over the other.
Tevaga was sin-binned for striking at Brown in round 17 as tensions spilled over and it's unlikely the pair will have forgotten what transpired. Add in Kane Evans taking on his former club, and former Warrior Isaiah Papali'i joining the Eels, and it should be an intriguing encounter.

Sharks (Round 17, Netstrata Jubilee Stadium; Round 21, Mt Smart Stadium): Forget Shaun Johnson's return to Mt Smart Stadium for the first time, Cronulla were among the main reasons the Warriors missed a fairytale finals spot in 2020 because of another man - Toby Rudolf.
If the Warriors had it their way, Rudolf would've been playing for them in 2021, but he changed his mind after originally agreeing to a long-term deal. Making matters worse, Rudolf scored the match-winner in a tense affair in round 18 that proved costly.
The Sharks have had the wood over the Warriors, winning 12 of the last 15 clashes.

Toughest stretch

The Warriors' five-week block after their round 13 bye looms as critical with home clashes against the Storm (round 14), Dragons (round 16) and Panthers (round 18) and away trips to Newcastle (round 15) and Cronulla (round 17).

And another thing ...

The Warriors will return to the Sunshine Coast to play the Rabbitohs in 2021 after the fixture was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The two sides turned on a thriller at Sunshine Coast Stadium in 2019 with two late tries to Cody Walker proving the difference.

On first glance I like the draw. A good group of teams to play twice and some decent teams we avoid by only playing once.

3 x 5 day turn arounds is rough but no Thursday games is a positive.

As for location... honestly we just have to play wherever we play and take it as it comes.

I expect us to win the first 2 at home and lose the next to away. The second half of the season looks easier than the first half and I can see us going on a bit of a run and finishing strongly for the finals!

Crystal ball gazing but I see 16 wins out of 24 which would probably be 4/5 place.

Very happy with the draw overall. Great to get back to back home games at Mt Smart Stadium. I am looking forward to heading to the game against the Titans on the Gold Coast, and possibly the game at Suncorp stadium against the Eels
Bring on 2021
I also did a video on my thoughts on the draw on YouTube. If you want to check that out

Excellent draw for us really, except for Storm x2, can see us in the 8 on last year's form. Not expecting any nz games but who knows.

Typical newsletter from the CEO which does not address the elephant in the room - what are they going to do since members have already paid for season tickets

I notice we have a few times where we play teams twice within 5 rounds.
Some of which happen before we have played other teams even the once.
I'm a big fan of shortening the comp down so we just play each other once but while we have to live with this longer format, surely we can play everybody once first and then do the doubles up after that.

That would make sense for us fans.

And then there are the networks who want teams that have top billings lined up to play over a weekend, one good game between the big boys ideally each playing day....

And so all logic and sense goes out the window for us crap club supporters who are used as after the fact slot fillers.

The Warriors themselves need to fix this by being one of the elite clubs that enjoys a first pick in the scheduling.
