quick question, over the weekend they stated that Kata was playing Canterbury cup, is that a level below this? or even worse?

Interesting decision....good that they will partake in the u18 competition, but runs a real risk of losing players to other clubs once they hit 18 that aren’t quite ready to play Canterbury Cup and don’t want to hang around playing in NZ competitions.

I suppose the objective is to keep the best teenagers and allow the late bloomers to make on their own

The cynical side of me thinks they see this as a shorter competition in length so less costs....

The cream of the crop, those that haven't been poached before they are 16, will still be contracted to the club just like they are with the Jersey Flegg team so I don't think that will be a problem but do agree that some parents will prefer seeing them play tougher competition. If done right I reckon this could breed harder more battle toughened players just like the kids that came through Lion Red Cup and BarterCard but they must get it right...

I see these guys just played on Tv and just beat the top of the table sharks. Did anyone watch them? Any standouts?

Only saw the second half. We spent a large portion of it defending.

Our 13 stood out for me. Tall rangy guy, runs and tackles pretty hard and when our 6 went off injured he moved to five eight and put in some nice passing/kicking.

Our U20 players to play the most NSW cup this year are Phillip Makatoa, Tyler Slade, Sean Mullaney and Edward Kosi. None of them are on first grade development contracts.

While the U20 players that are on development contracts (Selestino Ravutaumada, Tom Ale, Eliesa Katoa and Brody Tamarua) have almost only played Jersey Flegg this year. Not sure where the development is in that.

Paul Turner has also played a fair bit of NSW cup while on a development contract.

I have no idea how the contract system works but because they are on development contracts and are not in the top 30 would I be correct in saying that the players in the nsw Cup side mostly can play for the top side so will be getting the opportunity over the guys on development contracts. With guys like makatoa, Ale getting a handful of games in nsw Cup to tests themselves against bigger bodies

Sort of. If your on a development contract you can now play for top side (since 30 June) like Adam Pompey on Friday. He’s the sixth player on a development contract, but he couldn’t debut before 30 June.

Take a guy like Phillip Makatoa for example, he’s playing regular NSW cup, but because he’s only on a U20 contract (he’s not in the top 30 or on a deveopment contract) he cannot play first grade this season (unless the club ask for compensation e.g injuries).

Penpal

Patrick Elia no longer at the club???? Looks like he's named in Auckland under-19 yawnion team. Crusaders/Canterbury academy chased him hard before he headed north to play league
