I'd be for releasing Lisone and Kata, for other options, but definitely not Lino. Man that would be a blow. T-H no where near NRL level yet.

How does the club release them when they are under contract for next season?

The club can't unless another club wants to sign them, then the player may ask for possibility of a release. Usually for players with 1 year to go on contract or players not getting first grade minutes.

Gotta be mutually agreed upon, usually if surplus to requirements, player has better opportunity elsewhere etc.

A team can release a player from a contract at any time. However just because a player is released doesn’t mean that the contract is void. It means the player can leave if he likes. If he doesn’t find a better contract he has the choice of staying.

I was thinking the "a bit of the process to work through" may have been around his shoulder. It then says Brown isn't too concerned about his shoulder.

The Warriors are adamant they cannot improve their reduced one-year extension offer for Kiwi international Issac Luke as Newcastle move to lure him back across the ditch in 2019.
Luke met with Knights coach Nathan Brown last week while he was in camp with the All Blacks, and is believed to be weighing up a two-year deal from next season.
Newcastle have cash to spend and already boast two New Zealand Test hookers on their books in Slade Griffin and Danny Levi, but the former is sidelined until the middle of next season with a horrific ACL rupture.
Despite suggestions the deal was signed and sealed on Tuesday, Brown told NRL.com that "there is still a bit of a process to go through yet if it is to happen", though negotiations continue to progress.
Brown is an unabashed fan of Luke's running game, and is not overly concerned by the shoulder surgery he is booked in for next week given the Warriors hooker played through the injury through the latter half of the club's finals run.
While the Warriors say they have not had any further indication on where Luke's future lies, it's understood that bench utility Jazz Tevaga has this week agreed to terms on a contract extension beyond 2018.
Highly-rated young hooker Nathaniel Roache is touted as Luke's long-term replacement should he take up Newcastle's interest, while Tevaga's retention and Karl Lawton are the club's other likely options.
"Our offer's on the table, we've offered [Luke] a deal for another year and that's the best offer we can make with our salary cap," Warriors CEO Cameron George said.
"His manager's been working that through for the last month or and whether Issac's received a better offer elsewhere, we haven't heard that.
"I know he wanted to stay here, he's always been clear on that and that he's enjoyed his team here and Issac's a big part of that. But the salary cap reality has spoken in our sense and he's got to do what's best for him and his family."

The recruitment of Tohu Harris, Blake Green, Adam Blair and big-money extensions for Roger Tuivas-Sheck and Shaun Johnson has left the Warriors with little room to move in their salary cap next year.
Luke, 31, has been a revelation this year after two listless seasons since returning to New Zealand from South Sydney on a lucrative deal in 2016.
While negotiations between the Kiwi franchise and Luke have been ongoing for some months, it's understood the Warriors' offer for 2019 would require him to take a healthy pay cut to stay in Auckland.
Luke's strong family ties are also a key factor in any decision he makes on his future, but he is also willing to move back to Australia if it means a longer term deal to further his career.
Meanwhile the Knights are also bidding to lure Warriors back-up half Mason Lino to the Hunter as well, with a two-year deal tabled.
Lino, a two-time Samoan international with 17 NRL games to his name, is currently weighing up the offer with the expectation the Warriors will release him from his 2019 contract.

They did the budgets before he pulled his finger out and started playing to his potential. In that case hard luck.
Nah don't believe it. There's been plenty of signing news including upgraded and extended contracts in the time since Luke pulled his finger out. Clearly more to it than just salary cap constraints.

When it comes to players on FG contracts so far we've lost Mannering, signed Ah Mau and extended Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Fusitua and Maumalo (anyone else I'm missing?). If that leaves us with significantly less money than we've had over the prev years it must mean our backs have been upgraded (Roger Tuivasa-Sheck would probably take a chunk of that).
The interesting thing is as Mr Brownstone said, Maumalo and Fusitua' extensions came midway through the season by which time Luke had shown good form. I'm thinking the one good year he's had hasn't done enough to make up for the two bad ones (particularly the first when he came in overweight as a player that was expected to bring the club out of its unprofessional rut).
I doubt the club would have even offered him the one extra year had Roache not been injured all season, good form and all.

Other things to factor in are bonuses which may have kicked in due to making representative teams and also backdated contracts (may not be to the extent of the Bulldogs but even increases of say $50k each year add up pretty quick).

My guess is the length of contract is the biggest sticking point. The club possibly believe a longer contract may make Luke lazy. I would support that view. I would only want the club to include an option for year 2 in their favour, not his.

Luke has had one season this year of probably 75% quality vs 2 previous seasons of well below par, shoulder injury, getting old, apparently has off field distractions, liable to having brain snaps. I wouldn't be offering him more than a year at a time and not anywhere near what he was on.

Listening to Radio Sport this is entirely how the Luke situation came about.
The Club cannot sit by and save some coin in case a shit player decides to come good, think about it, that would be impossible economics,..,if they set aside money in case a player came good that would kill them dead in the water should they have had another shit season, they would be stuck with what they have with no room to change personnel.
Sure the Warriors signed other people after Lukes form improved, but that would be based on templates made while Luke was shit, at what point do you expect these people to get the Crystal ball out ? .....who knew Luke would try all year ? evidenced pointed to him not.,...two years of it.
One thing we can say with certainty is that this thread is redundant. The monies spent. Not even the great Isaac Luke can get a high pay.

If I was Luke , I would take the year deal and play well enough to get another deal at the end of that.

If another company was offering you double your current salary and a contract that was twice as long as what you currently have been offered by your current employer, would you actually stay? I wouldn’t.

Truth is Melbourne win premierships. Warriors and Knights don’t.
My point was more that it’s very easy to say turn down the money, when you’re not the one who misses out of the money. He doesn’t have many big money years left. It’s likely that this Newcastle deal will be his last massive pay check of his career. Even if he plays really well next season he’s going to be getting on and very unlikely to find a contract that will match what they are offering now and recoup the loss he would be taking plying for the warriors next year.
