General 2017 Warriors Trial Matches

Anyone else think Hingano is just too small at the moment? I know he's only 19, but all the other 6's in the comp have some meat on them. Really hoping Foran is fit and ready for round 3.
He looks bigger than Maloney?

A lot of halves start off small.
Benji was a runt when he first came on the scene.
Shaun Johnson was slim.
Jai Field is smaller than Ata.
He will get bigger and stronger eventually?

One thing I was impressed with in the titans trial game was the changes Kearney has implemented with regards to structures.

I have been critical since Cleary left that the warriors didn't play with enough structure, and that they didn't work for the tries they scored. They scored via flash or one off stuff.

The trial at the weekend showed a really simple basic structure focussed on controlling the ruck, direct front foot ball, and out working the titans. I.e. they outground them and were pulling away at the end. That's what our forward pack will excel at, outworking other sides with little in the way of flash. With the spine the warriors can run out, the structures in place so far, remind me of modified storm structures. Simple, effective, rely on the spine for the creativity.

Defensively, they worked for each other too.

Also was happy to see Shaun Johnson has started to play league and got his jersey dirty. And his kicking game wasn't just aimless bombs.

Early days, but giving Kearney an early pass mark for structures and belief.

Liked your post especially the bit about bombs. They do my head in, so happy not to see any.

There is a time and place for a bomb. Shouldn't be most sets though. Saw a couple from Shaun Johnson on the weekend but they were what tweaked me to the fact he wasn't bombing as much. He has a huge bomb, but wasn't using it per se. He was doing shallower bombs which indicated a change in tactics to me. Shallower bombs of course give the defence less time to get around the ball and isolate the fullback more.

The other obvious kicking tactic I saw was significantly more repeat sets versus normal. I.e. signs of a tactical kicking game.

Simple, direct structures with purpose. Of course this might all change next week :)

Just watched the game for what must be the 6th time, took some notes throughout:

- forwards running in numbers to keep the defense honest, not just one-out hitups
- variation in attack: using the width, putting players under etc.
- I hate these commentators
- halves playing both sides/same side
- markers getting out quickly and making early contact on the forward runner
- improved kicking game, looks like we're kicking for touch more often which might suggest we're pacing ourselves. Hopefully it'll leave us with more in the tank in the back end of the game
- need more pressure on kicker
- naming Roger Tuivasa-Sheck captian was brilliant, he's playing out of his skin... he and mannering are definitely the people I want leading this playing group
- aggressive tackling/ hitting hard and sticking, I like this because it'll instill a sence of fear and apprehension in our opponents when they run the ball, something which I think has been missing for a while
- running at the half-back (mostly bunty), I like this because it provides easy meters and tires the opposition play maker
- Roger Tuivasa-Sheck jumping into first receiver
- kick reception is weak (kickoff and dropout)
- Fusitua has finally realised how big he is
- tui to Fusitua pass looked like a set play, I hope it was as I'd like to see tui given a more dynamic role than just kick returns and finishing, he has the skills after all
- support runners can get lazy late in the game (lisone, vete), no point being there if it's obvious you won't get the ball. Need to improve fitness/effort
- bunty and papalii do 1%ers i.e. support running with intent
- right side more comfortable attacking
- tomkins needs longer sprigs
- left side should implement play where wing/centre cuts back in (used by leuluai and manu last year)
- peteru looked good, late bloomer?
- scramble D looks good, desperate
- Johnson comfortable on D
- Clark ahead of Tevaga based on passing
- I really hate these commentators
- best set play same as ages ago, Johnson > FB > Centre
- johnson taking on the line a little bit more (just a little)

You had me till this note - then I began to wonder if you actually watching the right trial game;)

I know it's not really relevant, but James Bell falling over like he did in the second half just took me back to the good old days lol
