Palmerston North is braced for its first visit by the Vodafone Warriors since 1995 following today’s confirmation it will host the club’s only trial on New Zealand soil ahead of the 2017 NRL campaign.

The encounter against the Gold Coast Titans has been locked in for the Central Energy Trust Arena on Sunday, February 19 (2.00pm).

The last time the club played a match in Manawatu was a trial against Central Districts at the Palmerston North Showgrounds on the original Auckland Warriors’ national tour before their debut in the competition in 1995.

The February 19 trial against the Titans will be the second of the Vodafone Warriors’ two preseason games, the other one to be played in Australia the previous weekend (the opponent and venue yet to be confirmed).

“We are excited to have the Vodafone Warriors visit Palmerston North as part of their 2017 preparations,” said John Lynch, Manager Venues and Events Palmerston North.

“Not only the rugby league community but all sports fanatics will love having some of the best players in rugby league on show when the Vodafone Warriors take on the Aquis Titans at Central Energy Trust Arena.

“This promises to be a highlight in the summer events calendar at Central Energy Trust Arena and I encourage locals and visitors to support these events when they come to our city.”

Vodafone Warriors managing director Jim Doyle said the decision to play in Palmerston North underlined the club’s commitment to take the Vodafone Warriors to the regions.

“Last season we had trials in Whangarei and Nelson as well playing a NRL home game in New Plymouth and two away games in Wellington and Christchurch,” he said.

“It’s really important to us to visit other centres because we want to do all we can to connect with members and fans throughout New Zealand.”

The Palmerston North trial will have added appeal for new Vodafone Warriors head coach Stephen Kearney, who was raised on the Kapiti Coast not too far south, while younger brother Aaron played representative rugby union for nearby Horowhenua Kapiti.

“Being our last trial before the season starts, this will be hugely important for us,” he said.

“We’ll definitely be looking to put out our best available squad to face Gold Coast and we’ll be expecting a solid performance ahead of the season starting.”

Featuring in the Vodafone Warriors’ 2017 squad are the likes of Ryan Hoffman, Simon Mannering, Manu Vatuvei, Jacob Lillyman, Issac Luke, Ben Matulino, Blake Ayshford, Bodene Thompson, Shaun Johnson, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Solomone Kata, Tuimoala Lolohea, Sam Lisone, Albert Vete, David Fusitua, Jazz Tevaga, Nathaniel Roache and more.

In line to appear for Gold Coast in Palmerston North will be superstar Jarryd Hayne plus former Vodafone Warriors Konrad Hurrell and Aganatius Paasi as well as Greg Bird, Kane Elgey, Ryan James, Josh Hoffman, Chris McQueen, Nathan Peats, Zeb Taia and Ash Taylor.

Going off Kearney's International style, we'll see the typical no names side with some names who need a fitness run thrown in (usual go then).

The Tits are good sports agreeing to roll against us every year.
The Storm aren't interested in having their systems disrupted by us in the off season lol

According to the forum last night the Warriors are planning on taking a backseat at the Auckland Nines and amping up the team for trials. Also they are playing the Storm for their first trial on the Sunshine Coast I think it was...

Cheers for that bro.

Big changes then.

Dean Lonergan will be pissed if true.

Prolly see the nines go to Aus then.

Its the star studded Warriors sides that have sold tickets to locals.

You mean like they did last year when we thumped their C team while their A team played someone else.

Wot made me larf about that is that the Warriors were only to happy to let them use us like the ISP bitches we were.

Poor Cappy.

Awesome, a warriors match in my home town!
Cool bro.

Happy for you.

That is one hell of a rugby town u are from.

Years ago I went to a mates funeral in fielding.....got into an unprovoked brawl outside the trendy night spot there in palmy....the bouncers asked me if I wanted to play Union the next day for their social team....

I digress....as I was saying u are a true blue league man if you from there.

They'll peak too early if they focus to hard on the trials.

Everthing needs to build up to game one of the season.

Dont want the boys mentally exhausted by rd 6 because they trained too hard for the trials.

Knowing this team, anything is possible

That's a fair point - we could lose Shaun Johnson and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck for the season after Trail 1, IL and KF (assuming all's cool with the NRL) after Trial 2 because we took them seriously and played our best team. Balanced against the possibility of the team named for Rd 1 of the NRL who haven't spent time on the park in a real game situation and so we get thrashed...and SK names the same team thinking "they'll gel" and they don't and.....What's that black round thing with the 8 on it??

Some of the imponderables of trials...

Poor thing. Palmys best feature would be Manawatu Prison. Other then that you go to the pubs and get hammered or hang by the park and get stoned. Be the first trial in a while that'll I'll happily miss...

harsh bro, we've been living down here 10 days and loving it so far.

Will definitely be at the trial.

I was there two days and have never been so bored in my life. Was young and single then. Theres nothing to do there but get wasted. Thankfully the girls are easy...

fair enough, I'm older and coupled up - and we're both from small towns originally. the only thing about Auckland I'll really miss is Mt Smart...

Awesome I'll be at that one.
Add another spot I've seen them play at.
So far I've attended warriors games at the showgrounds in chch, Lancaster park in chch, Cbus stadium, suncorp stadium and also trial games at pizzey park ( Burleigh Bears ground), Coffs Harbour and toowoomba.
Would love to get to a game at mt smart one day- the atmosphere always looks awesome on tv.
It's on the bucket list.
