2017 Warriors Recruitment Strategy and Targets
RegBasicPlasticChessPieces.jpg

Mainly a thread for ideas about the Warriors recruitment or recruited players. Also a dumping ground for off topic posts from the Recruitment and Rumour thread that deserve to be discussed.

Opinions may include what positions the club need to recruit in, the type of player (professional, high work rate, etc), failings in the last recruitment office, establishing an office in Australia, why player X was not a good recruitment choice, recruiting from outside Auckland... the list is endless.

Thought Id bring across the info from the locked Roster thread over here for discussion. Gonna be a busy year for Tony Iro with the amount of players coming off contract. Some from the 2018 list need to be re-signed as well to fight off the vultures.

If anyone spots a mistake, missed player or updated info let us know...

Does anyone have confirmation on Vete. I'm sure someone (might have even been Iro himself) said we had an option on Vete for 2018 when the Titans rumours started up.

Also the off contract 2017 list has Roache twice.

I thought Manu's final year was 2017... hopefully he gets a tap on the shoulder this year

will be disappointed if Manu is in the team based on his income, as opposed to his form and effectiveness. tough calls need to be made, hopefully competition is fierce and Manu can see that the mortgage he has had over the jumper is no longer in place. Still astounded that given Manus recent performances, age and effectiveness that a contract extension was offered....As a supporter this is the s$%t that grates me. we have a soft edge embracing the whole organisation. I hear the talk from here the Jim Doyle is an astute operator, so hoping that a harder edge is instilled across the whole organisation. Sick of limp decisions just making it harder for us.

Agree wholeheartedly. As far as retention goes the club need to grow a set. I appreciate we have some hurdles in terms of recruiting players of similar ilk without blowing the budget but Manu's contract was far too long for someone who was already showing signs of decline. One year too long IMO. This year should have been his final one with a drastically reduced offer for 2018 that would suit the club or ensure he heads to the UK.

Manu still has a lot to offer. Fact is he is still one of the two best wingers in the team along with the emergent David Fusitua. There really is only Tuimoala Lolohea and Ken Maumalo who are next in the pecking order.

Doyle can be as astute as he wants but when it comes to the make up of the team thats all on the coach. Always has been and always will be. It was Cappy who wanted Manu Vatuvei re-signed. It was Cappy that wanted Konrad Hurrell re-signed. Coaches team. Coaches call. Here's hoping Mooks is the astute one and gets it right this time round and Tony Iro and Jim Doyle get the salary and length end right...

Yep, Cappy wants Manu and Hurrell re-signed, and they shit on him by doing prescription drugs after a big loss. That's loyalty for ya'.

I think the prescription drugs thing is widespread. The last straw was mixing with Hurrell to do it.

"Sideshow Bob" has already gone to the Titans all of a sudden.
Speaking of Sideshow, a friend of a friend of a friend tells me he reckons that Titans preseason isn't nearly as tuff or arduous as the Storm's. And thats what worries me about signing Storm players, you're getting the player not the Storm and you take Bellamy, Smith, Cronk and Slater out of the equation and you're left with SK, Luke, Shaun Johnson and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck. . . . Dammit why does that look pretty good on paper?

A situation our club also should be familiar with taking Dane Nielsen and Todd Lowrie out of their system. The Storm pre-seasons have a reputation for being up there with the best. Something I'd like to hear about our side. Although the news you mention about the Titans training is kind of good to hear as it is about another club instead of ours for a change.

Harris wouldn't be a bad pick up if we are looking to rebuild our forward pack. Again hopefully we replicate his form at the Storm.

It will be interesting to see what sort of fight the Storm put up for him. They usually build their sides around the big 3 and recycle the other positions with a good record of getting guys to play above the level they showed at their previous clubs. The big 3 are getting older now so they may need to keep guys they previously were happy to let go. After losing Proctor you'd think signing Harris and NAS would be up their in terms of priority.

With so many players off contract this year it is crucial that we get our recruitment right for this year as it won't be as easy to change direction in future years.

I think we have made mistakes in signing the big names (Luke, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Hoffman ) without thinking about the differences in the styles of play and strengths in their previous teams.

Luke was extremely effective behind the Burgess brothers and co, the size of the Rabbitohs pack enabling quick play the balls and space up the middle for his running game and giving him time to run through his options. Our pack lacks the size to do that.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck set records in 2015 playing off skilful back rowers with offloading skills and talented halfs who like to take the ball to the line. We don't have any ball playing backrowers and our star half prefers to take the ball from depth.

Hoffman was a great cog in a highly organised efficient storm team where every thing is role based and highly structured. We have never been able to play this way and worse still have had to move our most consistent and one of our best players from his favoured position, to one in my opinion not 100% suited to.

I think management need to think carefully about recruiting players that are going to compliment the big three in Johnson, Luke and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and bring out the best in them.

So basically what you're saying to management is hurry up and sign the "Kiwi Hulk".

Ha yeah that's pretty much it. It's bugs me that when we let Packer go we didn't replace him with a big unit, same with a ball playing backrower for Mateo.
