~ B I G D I C K ~ Mooks coming in with the axe. Manu has been long overdue for some NSW Cup tbh. Hopefully he steamrolls some fools, finds his mojo and figures out how to defend passably over the next few weeks. It's just a pity Maumalo (who is arguably worse in every area) has taken Manu's NRL spot.

Used to quite like watching the NSW cup, not much to see in the team this week.

Pauga, Sipley - we already know what Allwood, Ayshford, Gavet are capable of.

Though on name alone King Vuniyayawa deserves a look!

Manu's just getting some match fitness in. He'll be back by Round 3 latest...
Is this the case for Bodene?

He was named in the 21 man first grade squad but Id expect him to drop off.

If he's fit to play, surely he'd be apart of the reserves too, for match fitness?

From what I've heard, Bodene will move up and finally into the named 17 on Sunday if he gets medical clearance - otherwise, at his stage, he won't play at all this weekend.

Of course, plans can change and he may still be playing in the NSWarriors if they decide he needs some game time.

Just call me The Mole, Mk II, with a foot in both camps ;)

Bodene Thompson will be for a stint if fit. He wont play 80 minutes like Manu would be expected to. There in lies the difference...

Makes sense, I remember it was the same situation for Bodene last season where he missed preseason but came off the bench vs the Tigers and actually had a decent game.

Still, against the Knights it wouldn't hurt for Thompson to blow off the rust in the reserves, allowing Papalii to get a run after his strong preseason - though no rush as he's still a kid.

As far as I am concerned SK isn't putting a foot wrong so far. We have been banging on for years about players getting match fitness after injury in the Reserves.

Those front rowers in ISP can prove there they can play long minutes to displace Gubb. Succesful teams have guys like him all the time. 100% give me an average player who gives it a dig , rather than 'star' who goes missing most of the time.

A lot of us mistake the value of a full game replay rather than a highlights reel.

A sizzling 42-point first half scoring blitz catapulted the Vodafone Warriors to a 52-24 victory in their season-opening Intrust Super Premiership clash against Newcastle at Mount Smart Stadium today.

With captain and halfback Mason Lino pulling all the strings, the home side was in total control in the first 40 minutes only to splutter in the second half as the Knights hit back with four tries and 18 points in all.

Fullback Matt Allwood had opened the scoring in the third minute, surging across on the left side before a slick Lino ball put second rower King Vuniyayawa over on the other side.

The lead became 18-0 with Allwood’s second try when he chased down a Lino grubber before Newcastle scored its only first half try through fullback Nick Meany.

From the restart, the Knights allowed the ball to bounce and left wing Manu Vatuvei, chasing hard, was able to collect and go over to extend the margin to 24-4 after just 18 minutes.

Three more tries followed before the halftime siren with Lino heavily involved in most of the action. Standoff Sam Cook had the first of his two tries, right wing Junior Pauga went over in the corner and big interchange forward Chris Satae powered over from close range. Lino, kicking with metronomic precision, converted every try in the half to set the Vodafone Warriors up for what seemed likely to be a huge winning margin.

However, there was a drop-off in intensity allowing the Knights to make some inroads.

There were just two more tries for the home side – a sweet Lino cut-out pass giving Pauga his second – to take the home side’s score past 50 for the day while the Knights battled bravely to stem the flow of points.

Sounds like very good news. Especially with Foran out for a while. Manu has always been a confidence player, so maybe this will be enough for him to come in and tear it up next week. Ideally I'd like to give him longer in NSW Cup, but Maumalo is just so dogshit that it isn't feasible.

Back rowers James Bell and Isaiah Papalii have both been named in the Vodafone Warriors’ starting line-up for Saturday’s second-round Intrust Super Premiership clash against Canterbury-Bankstown at Mount Smart Stadium No 1 (1.00pm kick-off).

Bell missed last Sunday’s 52-24 win over Newcastle with injury while Papali’i made his NRL debut against the Knights. He has also been included on the NRL side’s extended bench for Friday night’s encounter with Melbourne.

Others included in both squads are veteran wing Manu Vatuvei, prop James Gavet and Mason Lino. All three turned out for the ISP side against the Knights.

While the Ricky Henry-coached Vodafone Warriors won impressively on Sunday, the Bulldogs lost 14-22 to the Mounties.

Yep. Same person. Last time I seen him play was for Pt Chev Pirates. Was always a handful in the Fox Memorial...

He made good metres and had really good leg drive in the tackle. Think Monty Betham was saying he was a Penrith junior. Will be good to see how he goes this year.

He looks really good! I know the level is low but he is a big body and has good footwork too.
