Matulino to have surgery on knee
Wed 11th January, 05:19PM

The Vodafone Warriors have today confirmed that prop Ben Matulino will miss the start of the 2017 NRL season due to a knee complaint which requires surgery.

The Kiwis international has had a disrupted pre-season after having an operation on his right knee in September, ruling him out of contention for last year’s Four Nations tournament in England.

Matulino then experienced discomfort in his left knee during training following the Christmas break and after seeking medical advice, he will have an operation in the coming days.

Vodafone Warriors head of athletic performance Balin Cupples said it was an unfortunate setback but that surgery was certainly the right option at this point in the pre-season.

“Unfortunately, Ben injured his left knee at training and it was determined that surgical management would provide the best outcome for him at this stage of the season,” he said.

“It is expected he will return to play early in the 2017 season.”

The news is a blow to new coach Stephen Kearney’s plans for the season ahead but he said it was important for Matulino to get the right treatment.

“It’s disappointing but we are taking a long-term view here,” he said.

“It makes sense to get the knee sorted now. Naturally, Ben’s disappointed but he’ll work hard on his rehab and will undoubtedly be a wonderful addition to the team once he’s recovered.”

Anyone know of any other injuries let us know. The club were really poor at keeping us updated last year so we are missing a huge chunk of last seasons list.

Right now we only have Ben Matulino on the list but Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is on no contact training. Lillyman is good after his injury. Anyone else???

Tuivasa-Sheck ready to test season-ending knee injury

NZ Warriors fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck feels like he's nearing top speed again, after spending most of the past 12 months rehabilitating a season-ending knee injury.

Tuivasa-Sheck ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee in the Warriors' 24-20 win over Canterbury Bulldogs last April, just seven games into his first season with the Auckland-based club.

But the Kiwis international, the NRL's top metre-eater the previous year for Sydney Roosters, is ready to resume his Warriors career.

I'm pumped," he insists. "It feels awesome.

"Back in November, I hit the ground running from day one. It's been a good build-up and I'm just excited to get some more footy into it now.

"It took some time, but I'm flying now. I trust my knee, because I trust in the medical team that I have here and the people around me.

"Now I'm just putting it against the boys to see how it goes."

Tuivasa-Sheck admits he still has bad days, but has learned to cope with those minor setbacks, as he prepares for the new season.

"About two weeks ago, I thought I was flying, and I woke up one morning and I was puffing again," he says. "That's probably the toughest part - when I think I'm right and then it just doesn't work with me.

"It's a normal thing, they keep telling me, so don't get too hard on myself. It's been nine months since I ran, so it's going to flare up.

"They know about it - it's not something random, so just keep going, ice up, recover well and be healthy, because there will come a time when my knee will be normal again."

Part of the recovery process for Tuivasa-Sheck has been a greater awareness of running mechanics. The thing that once came naturally now come as a conscious effort.

"I was probably doing it anyway, but now I'm just more aware of it."

Finally good to get some real news in regards to the team good to hear Roger Tuivasa-Sheck has recovered well ACL injurys can take time so fully expecting him 100% till about round 4-6

Interesting take from Tui sounds like someone told him to pull his head in regards to his position and do what's best for the team. Also Kearney mentioning Gubb's name seems he is gonna be sticking around for the time being smart move considering Matulino injury and have no real experience depth at prop.

The more I hear about the Foran situation the more I want it to hurry up and end either way it's dragging now and could become an distraction to the club esp with the media asking every 2nd question about him hopefully the NRL sorts it fast either way so they either move on with him or without

NRL 2017: Kieran Foran and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck on the mend from injuries
6 hours ago
Source: AAP

WARRIORS stars Kieran Foran and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck are nearing full fitness just over a month out from the start of the NRL season.

Foran, 26, signed a one-year deal with the club in September but is yet to receive the green light to play from the governing body after a trouble-plagued 2016.

The Kiwi Test five-eighth was released from his lucrative Parramatta deal in July as he addressed mental issues and his season was cut short due to a shoulder injury.

The Auckland-born playmaker was at pre-season training on Monday doing some sprints and drills with Warriors teammates but mostly trained solo.

“He goes in to see a specialist this afternoon so that’s another step forward for him,” coach Stephen Kearney said.

“I’ve seen a real improvement from him and what he can do with us over the past month or so and he’s come back after Christmas in fantastic shape.”

The NRL want assurances on Foran’s mental health and relationship with gambling identity Eddie Hayson before ratifying his Warriors contract.

Club chief executive and former NRL operating officer Jim Doyle initially expected to receive the all clear by Christmas but has since revised his expectations to January.

It’s been reported Foran will not be eligible for the side’s first-round match against Newcastle in March.

Kearney told reporters that irrespective of any administrative hurdles, Foran was looking in good nick physically and almost past his shoulder problems.

The Warriors will kick off their 2017 campaign at the Auckland Nines in a fortnight and Kearney revealed star No.1 Tuivasa-Sheck was likely to make his return from an ACL injury at the pre-season tournament.

“That’s what everyone expects of Roger, he epitomises professionalism and if there’s a box to tick, he’s ticking it plus more,” Kearney said.

Trials against Melbourne and Gold Coast will follow in mid-February, before the season kicks off in earnest on March 5 at Mt Smart Stadium.

Young gun Ata Hingano will assume the No.6 jumper if Foran’s clearance doesn’t come through, while livewire Tuimoala Lolohea will play 2017 on the wing.

Lolohea was linked with a move to St George Illawarra because Foran’s impending move to the Warriors was seen as a roadblock to his desire to be a first-choice playmaker.

keeping him out of the 9s would piss off the promoters, and those who bought a ticket, but otherwise might not be a bad thing.

WTF, why is it, that our boy's seem to be the ones that get injured all the time??? Is it because we follow this club, so we are onto the injured list more? than say other NRL teams.

Seems to me, we have terrible luck when it comes to players getting injured. Starting to think our club is simply cursed. Really hope Shaun Johnson isn't to bad, fingers crossed.
