Five players will make their NYC debuts when the Vodafone Junior Warriors open their 2017 season against Newcastle at Mount Smart Stadium today (11.45am kick-off).

A sixth player – West Coaster Jordan Pinnock – will be having his first outing for the club, ironically against his old Knights team-mates after appearing 11 times for Newcastle last season.

The five newcomers are wing Edward Vaeau-Mulitalo, second rower Shane Hannam, loose forward Soane Hufanga and interchange forwards Tayhler Paora and Havi Tupouniua.

University student Vaeau-Mulitalo has been signed from a rugby union background with the King’s College First XV while Masterton-born Hannam has played for the Glenora Bears, New Lynn Stags and Bay Roskill Vikings.

Hufanga, another St Paul’s College product, has also been with the Knights previously while his Auckland junior clubs have been the Richmond Rovers, Mount Wellington Warriors and Ponsonby Ponies. Paora is a Manurewa Marlins junior while Tupouniua, a St Peter's College product, has links with the Marist Saints and the Bay Roskill Vikings.

Also on debut will be new Vodafone Junior Warriors coach Grant Pocklington. He’s able to call on 2016 regulars in co-captains Kenese Kenese and Chris Sio as well as Kane Telea, Lewis Soosemea, Melino Fineanganofo, Mat Faitotoa, Chanel Harris-Tavita, Joe Vuna and Jerome Mamea.

Newcastle had too many weapons for the Vodafone Junior Warriors as it marched to a 48-10 victory in today’s first-round NYC encounter at Mount Smart Stadium.

The home side was only briefly in contact when co-captain Kenese Kenese drove over to leave his side just 6-10 adrift after 20 minutes but the Knights were always able to dictate terms.

Two tries had them 22-12 ahead at halftime and quickly extended to 28-6 after the break when Jack Johns – the great Andrew Johns’ son – scored.

The Vodafone Junior Warriors responded soon after with a Dylan Tavita try but the Knights ran in a further four tries to finish well clear leaving new Vodafone Junior Warriors coach Grant Pocklington and his players disappointed.

[NYC match report] Storm's sodden victory

Lewis Soosemea scores a try. Junior Warriors v Junior Storm, Round 2 of the 2017 NYC Holden Cup Rugby League season at Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland, New Zealand. 10 March 2017. Copyright photo: Renee McKay / www.photosport.nz

A vastly improved effort wasn’t enough to bring about victory for the Vodafone Junior Warriors over Melbourne at a sodden Mount Smart Stadium tonight.

Smarting from a disappointing 10-48 loss to Newcastle last Sunday, the Grant Pocklington-coached home side needed to lift significantly and did, but only after another slow start.

Inside the first 10 minutes, Melbourne centre Sala Finau was sent over twice to take his side out to a 12-0 lead.

Battling the elements, the Vodafone Junior Warriors were being challenged to stay in the contest but got right back into it in unlikely circumstances.

The Storm pumped up an attacking bomb, the ball went loose in the contest and speedy left wing Lewis Soosemea – one of the club’s fastest players – latched onto it, breaking clear and sizzling the best part of 90 metres to score.

The score-line extended to 10 points in Melbourne's favour at halftime – 16-6 – on the back of left wing Harlan Collins’ first try and then 20-6 in the second half after Collins snared a second.

There was time left, though, and the Vodafone Junior Warriors didn’t want for time in Melbourne’s end of the field.

However, in admittedly testing conditions, they couldn’t hang onto the ball long enough to really create pressure.

At last they had some joy when interchange forward Jerome Mamea burrowed over, Kane Telea converted. At 12-20 there was hope but ultimately the Vodafone Junior Warriors couldn’t execute their plays.

Pocklington demanded a lift intensity and effort, resulting in a much-improved defensive performance but there was no victory to show for it.

Match details | Mount Smart Stadium, Auckland

Vodafone Junior Warriors 12 (Lewis Soosemea, Jerome Mamea tries; Kane Telea 2 conversions).

Melbourne Storm 20 (Sala Finau 2, Harlan Collins 2 tries; Hayden Herbert 2 conversions).

Halftime: 16-6 Knights.

Referees: Phil Henderson and Gavin Reynolds.

Vodafone Junior Warriors | Kane Telea; Lewis Soosemea, Junior Pauga, Melino Fineanganofo, Mat Faitotoa, Edward Vaeau-Mulitalo; Chanel Harris-Tavita, Eiden Ackland; Kenese Kenese (c), Chris Sio (c), Soane Hufanga; Joe Vuna, Havi Tupouniua; Shane Hannam. Think it is the whole team.
He seems alright from what i have seen.
Noticed in his highlight reel , that he always had a sub number on.
Might be more effective coming of the pine.
Solid and dominant defender.
Thinking work rate?

For a player training with the top grade over the offseason, I thought he'd be dominating but has looked fairly average so far and has been outplayed by Kenese. The whole team has been shit though. For the wraps Kane Telea has received I've been most disappointed with him in his U20 career so far. There is nothing special about this kid and I can't see him ever cracking first grade.

Players I think that will have actual careers in the NRL are Chanel Harris-Tavita, Lewis Soosemea, Lino Fineanganofo and Kenese Kenese. People should be keeping an eye out for Chanel Harris-Tavita, he's the best prospect we have at the club that hasn't already debuted, best player in our U20's and IMO has as much talent as Ata Hingano did coming up through the ranks.

Of the rookies, I like the looks of Edward Vaeau-Mulitalo (Kings College 1st XV centre in 2016) and Havi Tupouniua (young second rower that has legit height, an offload and high work rate)

The team has looked terrible since Stacey Jones stopped coaching them.

Telea isn’t even as good as Abbey was, and we’ll see what level he’s got reached this evening.

Fullback seems a tough gig these days, unless your exceptionally good, going to be hard to find a starting job at that position.

What's happened to our juniors I used to love watching them dominate in the u20s comp but we have been shit for a while now I remember watching players like Shaun Johnson Locke Sonny Fai Fish etc none of the past few years players come close to these guys

Thanks Weno and The Cool. I have only seen bits of a couple one game and Jordan Pinnock looked solid defensively but not much else to offer in a fairly disorganised side.

Maybe we should get John Ackland back in some capacity as coach or talent ID . The U20s teams have never been the same since he left. Sure he may have played props on the wing etc but he also developed a lot of young NRL talent more than any coach since

I think we are missing the recruiting that John Ackland used to do.
The team haven't look good since he left.
Also with the Warriors not doing well the last 6 seasons or so I think the better local prospects are looking overseas.
Old story: success breeds success.

The Vodafone Junior Warriors were just denied their first win of the season last Saturday when the Bulldogs scored a late converted try to win 24-22.

They had the lead for much of the match only to be pipped with three minutes left.

Two changes have been made to the starting line-up to face the Dragons on Sunday with Dylan Tavita named at halfback and Jerome Mamea at loose forward.

A 10-minute period in the second half ultimately cost the Vodafone Junior Warriors their first win of the season when they went down 30-34 to the Gold Coast Titans in today's NYC clash at Mount Smart Stadium.

With less than ten minutes to go the Titans were leading 34-14 before the Vodafone Junior Warriors began to mount pressure resulting in tries to wing Edward Vaeaeu-Mulitalo and centres Kane Telea and Gibson Popoalii but it wasn’t enough with the clock beating them.

The Titans had opened the scoring early to lead 6-0 but, after gaining a share of possession, the Vodafone Junior Warriors answered back with hooker Erin Clark’s off load giving halfback Dylan Tavita the chance to go over and score. He was unable to convert the try to leave the Titans with a 6-4 lead.

It triggered a promising spell for the Vodafone Junior Warriors as they stitched together more points. Standoff Chanel Harris-Tavita popped the ball over the top for wing Lewis Soosemea to score in the left corner, leaving the Vodafone Junior Warriors 8-6 ahead.

Loose defence gifted Titans standoff Ethan Roberts a try which he converted for a 12-8 lead.

It was arm wrestle time and the Vodafone Junior Warriors dug in, staying patient to breach Gold Coast's line. They went to the left creating a huge hole for second rower Preston Riki to wander through off a Tavita-Harris short ball. Converted by Dylan Tavita, it gave the Vodafone Junior Warriors a 14-12 lead at the break.

The Titans came out firing in the second half and the Vodafone Junior Warriors found them difficult to contain.

There was some pinball football down the Titans' left edge allowing wing Jordan Birch to score. The Titans were up 18-14.

Mistakes presented the Titans with another opportunity with Brimson taking advantage to score before Moeaki Fotuaika barged over for another try. And then Curtis Dansey-Smaller caused more scoreboard damage to take Gold Coast out to an imposing 34-14 lead.

Facing the possibility of a heavy defeat, the Vodafone Junior Warriors regrouped and began to build some momentum setting up for wing Vaeau-Muiltalo to collect a grubber for a try out wide.

Another grubber kick provided an easy scoring opportunity for Telea with Tavita converting to bring the score back to 24-34.

While time was against them snatching a comeback win, the Vodafone Junior Warriors weren't done with yet with. Big metres from prop Kenese Kenese and then quick ball movement delivered a try for Popoalii and a four-point loss.

Match details | Mount Smart Stadium, Auckland

It does look dire but when you consider that Nathaniel Roache, Erin Clark, Junior Pauga and Isaiah Papalii are all eligible and playing ISP you realise that the club after all these years are finally getting it. All roads lead to NRL Premiership, not the NYC. Probably the one good thing Matt Elliott did while he was here...
