It's pretty clear to me where we've gone wrong.

Kidwell's trying to implement a tough, grinding, structured game-plan; similar to that of the Melbourne Storm and similar to what Kearney is trying to instill at the Warriors atm. The problem is that this won't work for the Kiwis, ESPECIALLY against the Kangaroos. Structured footy is Aussies' bread and butter, they'll beat us at that game every day of the week.

What we need is Warrior Ball. Get the biggest, baddest forward pack we can find and have them run it straight up the guts. To compliment them we'd need quick play the balls, dummy half runs and most importantly, support runners that are ready for offloads. This will give us the momentum and second phase play we need in order to create try scoring opportunities and dominate the opposition.

I don't think our defense is too bad. The Kangaroos are always gonna be a strike team capable of scoring from anywhere. If we can improve what we're doing WITH the ball, it should take a lot of gas out of their tanks and make defending a whole lot easier.

On another note, some people are saying the players didn't front up... but i disagree. It looked to me as if they were all putting in 100% for their teammates and country last night. It seems to me as if they're a little unsure of what/how they're supposed to be playing.

Ultimately this is all on Kidwell's shoulders. If he's any kind of coach he'll figure out what's not working for him and adjust accordingly. If that happens I don't see any reason why we can't be competitive come World Cup time. However if he can't make those necessary changes, it'll mean he's not ready for the job and I think he'd have to step aside.

We need to play against either a combined island players side or a combination
non Aussie NRL side an play a 3 series at the same time as origin ,
It would help us get some combination s an familiarity happening,
It would also benefit the international game as a whole ,
If we picked 4 poms 4 Tongans 4 Samoans ,4 fijians etc,,
The ratings would go through the roof, plus it would help
the less established countries develop a small core of elite players,
on another note can we get rusty back ,Wasn't for it , But seem to have changed
my mind.

16. Kenny Bromwich 5 Effective player at NRL level within the Storm machine, but hard to see what he brings to the international game.

From the Herald, says it all really.

They were very good. We were very uninspired. Who's that down to? The coach, I'd say. All the Warriors were probably shagged. The 2nd half was better but it didn't count for much at all. All very sub-Origin.

And risk injury on my beloved Warrior players, no thanks.

Our spine play together on a weekly basis anyway.

Gotta say, not a fan of Kenny Bromwich getting the ball on the 5th play.

Yes and no. When will Meninga get the credit he deserves for the great job he is doing with the Kangaroos. He coached Qld through 10 years of dominance and they brought him on to restore the ARU's justified position as king of the castle.
Good point. The Aussies are good at coming together quickly and forming combinations. Origin helps with that. We even complained back when Anderson was coach and got this test moved before Origin which gets occasional criticism for the season structure but they still manage to deal to us.

They have some fantastic players at the moment particularly in their spine. They do all of the basics well, read the game.

Adding to the players being good at coming together quickly they now have a coach who has been in the rep system for 10 years. Is he the most technical coach probably not but he surrounds himself with the right guys, the players play for him, he has experience of building a camp and preparing for a game.

We have a rookie coach who is still building his career. For this level you really need someone who has been coaching for a while who has worked through various situations, coached teams in different conditions. Find out what works.

This is standard for the Anzac test. This idea that things were much better under Kearney is ridiculous.. the Kiwis won it once and they normally get thrashed
At least under Kearney we were number 1 in the world.... at the moment we must be close to being 3rd in the space of only 6 games!!!

6. Kieran Foran 6.5 After two years away, a difficult return to test football behind a beaten pack. But looked the most likely source of attacking profit, especially in the first half.
7. Shaun Johnson 5 Inconsistent and indecisive display. Some promising runs and deft grubbers but undid good work with poor game management and decision making. Intercept pass was costly and one dead end run gave opportunity for third Kangaroos try.
- NZ Herald

Why are these two players held to such different standards?
Foran gets a pass because he was playing behind a beaten pack. Wasn't Shaun Johnson playing behind the same pack?
Foran was our most likely source of attacking profit? Yet it was Shaun Johnson who layed on both our tries...
Strange.

Probably the 'after 2 years away' part. It depends on the definition of attacking profit as well, points on the board vs go forward and metres in general play (getting the team rolling, organising players)

Australia have Mel Maninga.

England have Wayne Bennet.

NZ have who? I've never heard of him before. Probably some guy with potential who just needs more time.:banghead:

Foran = one of the most overrated players in the game. A rich mans Leuluai - same skill set but just a bit better at it.

Shaun Johnson was useless. His last play options were fucking pathetic. Consistently going dead on kicks or failing to complete. That warriors spine as a whole were completely outclassed, although Roger Tuivasa-Sheck did look the best of the four.

I have no confidence in Kidwell at all, he doesn't know how to use Taumalolo who I thought was very quiet despite having the most running metres of any forward. Zero impact from the bench. And just as predicted Kahu got dominated by the bigger bodied centres from Australia. Shock.

Well on the bright side at least we didn't pick up any injuries.
On the other side of the coin it sounds like Dugan and thurston will both be out for a while.

I hope this result and all the unfolding events shake up the NZRL and they're heavily scrutinised over the coming weeks.

We need an investigation!!!

Player Ratings: New Zealand v Australia

Herald rugby league writer Michael Burgess breaks down the player ratings from last night's Anzac Test.

12. Simon Mannering 8 It's frightening to imagine what the score might have been if Warriors veteran wasn't on the field. Some defensive misses in first half, but effort epitomised by chase to pin Ferguson inside his in goal and persistence to grab a try.
