Whoever from the Wellington Council was responsible for butchering the golden goose should be hung, drawn and quartered. If it was all of them then hang the lot. How you can destroy what was THE most successful annual sporting event in the country is beyond belief. Such a big loss for Wellington's tourism economy.
Theres a lesson here that I hope the Auckland Nines organisers learn from. When you pander to the small, but vocal, minority you do so at the expense of the majority. All these PC muppets complaining about the partying and boozing and making it more 'family friendly' have dealt a death blow to the tourney. The event never was about the sport or families even. It was about dressing up and having fun . Now thanks to the dogooders of this world we have lost this great event...

Agree. This is something Duco should look at and learn from. They have tried to promote the Nines as a different event.

One bad event with a few drunken incidents and some bad publicity from the Eden Park residents could mean pressure to move the event from Auckland. Its like New Years eve at some of our holiday spots; some years are bad and some years go smooth. You need to ride out the bad years.
Our event should be safe while we have the Auckland Council or whatever that tourism department is called helping with funding. Not sure if the Sevens was funded the same way but the Council in Auckland need events like the 9s to keep Eden Park busy.

The novelty wore off long ago.. It was the hottest ticket in town.
2000 - 2010 golden years of Welly sevens, big crowds, costumes, beers, fun.
Now days they might as well call it the PC sevens it's a sad sight seeing the cake tin with only a scattering of people
Just quietly, Waikato Stadium will be more then happy to take it off your hands.

It would have slowly died out, no entertainment event lasts forever, but they sure have sped the process up by trying their hardest to encourage 80% of their audience not to bother coming.

Actually, it wasn't that homophobic - more stereotypicalising - I was alluding to the fact that the crowd were more intersested in dressing up in brightly coloured spandex than watching the sport on offer.

As Dick Emery would have said, pre homophobia, "Ooooh, you are awful but I like you." Shame about the sevens though, a great event, even if there was a bit of rugby played, destroyed by the fun police and easily offended.

The problem with these people is they will always find something to complain about. They got their way with the 7s so then they move on to the next thing. It's sad and pathetic.
