Victory over Manly in another tense tussle today has enabled the Vodafone Warriors to retain a share of the lead in the Intrust Super Premiership.
After enduring tight contests in recent weeks against Newcastle (34-32), Wests Tigers (16-18) and Illawarra (12-8) this was another toe-to-toe fight as the Vodafone Warriors fought for the lead and ultimately just held on for a 24-22 win at Brookvale Oval.
The opening passage to the match had been ominous for the Vodafone Warriors.
In a carbon copy of the NRL encounter between the two clubs in Perth on Saturday, this one also saw the Sea Eagles bolt to an early 12-0 lead leaving the visitors with plenty of work to do to stay in touch.
Within a matter of minutes they were in business with prop Upu Poching over between the posts in the 26th minute and then halfback Mason Lino following up soon after. Lino converted both and it was 12-12.
Close to halftime fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad went in and Lino's conversion made it 18 points without reply to give the Vodafone Warriors an 18-12 lead at the interval.
The score-line was even at 18-18 a little more than 10 minutes into the second spell through a converted Cameron Davis try.
For the best part of 20 minutes it remained that way despite both sides bombing scoring opportunities but, as the final 10 minutes approached, Manly fullback Peter Schuster dropped the ball, an error which resulted in a 70-metre runaway try for Nathaniel Roache. With Lino off injured, Semisi Tyrell provided the conversion and the lead was 24-18 with 10 minutes to go.
With three minutes left Manly ensured there would be some nerves with a second try for Davis. It wasn’t converted but the home side was coming home strongly with just two points in it.
When an Isaac John pass sent wing Ben Fritz over in the 79th minute the Sea Eagles thought they had stolen victory – but a forward pass was ruled, the try didn’t stand and the Vodafone Warriors held on for their 12th win of the season to move to 28 points on the ladder.

Henare Wells returns from injury to start on the wing with the experienced Jonathan Wright returning to the centres for the Vodafone Warriors’ 20th-round Intrust Super Premiership encounter with the Mounties at GIO Stadium on Saturday (12.40pm kick-off local time; 2.40pm NZT).
The Mounties and the Vodafone Warriors – along with Illawarra – are level on 28 points at the top of the ladder with the Mounties first on points for and against, the Vodafone Warriors third.
It’s the second road trip on end for the Vodafone Warriors following a grinding 24-22 win over Manly last Sunday.

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad seems to be suffering Lolohea syndrome for the ISP side. Is there a position in the backline he hasn't played this year? Interesting that he retains his position over Wells. Must have had a strong game at fullback.

Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad should get a crack soon as he is in great form but dunno where he would play?
Wells has been fullback all season, what chance they're grooming him for the wing position now they've discovered Fusitua is the second best fullback at the club.
He on first look seems to possess some of the qualities we've been looking for in a winger, speed being his biggest asset.

He’s back in the halves with captain Mason Lino for the third-placed Vodafone Warriors’ meeting with the eighth-placed Wyong Roos.
Following their third and final bye last weekend, the Stacey Jones-coached side is on 30 points, level with Illawarra with both teams six points adrift of the Mounties.
Also back in the side is Jazz Tevaga after being used off the bench with the NRL side in recent weeks.

The Vodafone Warriors couldn’t reel in the Wyong Roos today, falling to a 16-20 loss in their 22nd-round Intrust Super Premiership clash at Morry Breen Oval in Wyong.
Their seventh loss of the season resulted in the Vodafone Warriors slipping from a share of second on the table with Illawarra.
The Cutters are now alone in second on 32 points after edging Manly 30-28 while the Stacey Jones-coached Vodafone Warriors remain on 30 points, a total they share with Wests Tigers. The Tigers will overtake them if they beat Penrith on Sunday.
The Vodafone Warriors never had the lead at any stage against the Roos, who now sit seventh.
They drew level at 6-6 with centre Semisi Tyrell’s 26th-minute try converted by Mason Lino but were eight points adrift at 6-14 at halftime.
There was no scoreboard movement in the opening phase of the second half until the 58thminute when Lino scored and converted to have his side just two points behind at 12-14 seemingly in position to make a challenge.
Unfortunately, the Vodafone Warriors conceded a try just a few minutes later to again fall eight points behind at 12-20.
There was a glimmer of hope when wing Viliami Kaveinga added his side’s third try in the 77thminute but the Vodafone Warriors couldn’t manufacture a last-gasp escape.
