We've had two of our biggest bars in town close down in the past few months - there might not be anywhere left to drink at by Feb!

Which two?

Was up in Tikipunga on the weekend visiting mum, the Tiki Tavern is still open ;), it's just weird seeing it with Speight's on the signage...

The Billiard Ballroom went tits up a while ago (goodbye to one of our only decentish gig venues), and Shotgun Bettys (the old Danger Danger) is closing too. Glad to hear the Tiki T's still OK, that was in a powerload of shit a while ago from what I heard. On the rare times I do drink in town, it's usually at Frings, who brew their own beer.

hmm maybe I'll head south and do a pub crawl on the way back to Auckland then... unfortunately the pub crawl might stop at Kaiwaka now one of my old classmates' brother runs the Three Furlongs...

Hope Hamilton gets some more action in the near future.
My mates dad used to play for the Doggies and he took us up to the Boxes when they played the Warriors there last year. Got on the piss with Steve Price, he's the real deal and said he felt bad that he had to talk it up about the Dogs because it was their home game when he said he was a Warrior though and though. Great man, Great atmosphere, Great game. (even though we lost because Manu can't catch)

Canterbury to host North Queensland, Canberra in 2016 Belmore fixtures

Canterbury also plan to play a game in Wellington, New Zealand, next season and then nine home games at ANZ Stadium. The NRL is yet to finalise the draw, which should be released in around a fortnight.

Both Belmore games will be sellouts, especially if the NRL approves a game against the defending premiers. Club requests may be easier to fulfil now with the NRL taking control back from Channel Nine of the season draw.

“We have made the request about who we would like to play at Belmore. Canberra and the Cowboys are the two we have requested,” said Canterbury chief executive Raelene Castle.

“We think there is some real history and some stories to be told around why those teams will make good opponents for us at Belmore. These two teams were chosen because of the history element.”

Castle also spoke about her club’s venture to Wellington, where the club hopes to play the New Zealand Warriors.

“We have identified Wellington as a market where the Bulldogs can have some impact,” she said. “We can extend the Bulldogs fan base.

Something of topic but FoxSport is showing the NZ warriors v Titans trial game!

Fox Sports has also confirmed they will broadcast three pre-season matches, including the Charity Shield on February 13, the New Zealand Warriors and Gold Coast Titans trial earlier that day, as well as Kieran Foran and Michael Jennings’ likely first outing for Parramatta against Penrith at Pepper Stadium on February 20.

Hopefully broadcast on FoxSports means Sky will pick it up. Sure they are just trials but after a summer without any games you start to look forward to watching some football.

Besides the 9s it also gives us a chance to look at our new look squad.

First trial team named...

Luke confirmed to face Titans

Major new signing Issac Luke, veteran wing Manu Vatuvei and second rower Ben Henry headline the Vodafone Warriors’ squad for Saturday’s NRL trial against Gold Coast at Whangarei’s Toll Stadium (5.30pm kick-off).

After missing the Downer NRL Auckland Nines, Kiwi hooker Luke will be making his first appearance for the club since being signed from South Sydney.

Vatuvei has already had a huge week with his wife Jennifer giving birth to the couple’s fourth daughter yesterday; on Saturday he’ll make his return from offseason shoulder surgery.

Also making a comeback will be second rower Ben Henry, who missed almost all of the 2015 season after his second serious knee injury in two years.

Four players from the Vodafone Warriors’ NRL Nines squad will face the Titans with Ken Maumalo on the wing, Ata Hingano at standoff and Albert Vete and Charlie Gubb in the front row.

Two other new signings – Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and Ligi Sao – are also included. Nicoll-Klokstad, signed from Melbourne, is set to start in the centres and Sao, who has returned to the club after three seasons with Manly, is at loose forward.

Other 2015 first graders named are Matt Allwood in the centres and Raymond Faitala-Mariner in the second row. A number of Vodafone Junior Warriors have also been picked including Erin Clark at halfback.

Among those on the bench is former Canterbury-Bankstown, Wests Tigers and Brisbane prop James Gavet, who has been on trial with the Vodafone Warriors in the offseason.

It will be nice to get our first look at Issac Luke.

Also a few other recruits we get our first look at in Warriors colours. In Sao and Nicoll-Klokstad. Then we Gavet who has been the subject of a lot of discussion on here.

Also good to see Henry has recovered to get some game time coming back from injury.

Picking Luke/Manu to get 20-30 minutes at the most in that side. I think this is very much a blowing the cobwebs and testing out the injury type of game for them (and Henry too).

For the most part it will be a NSW cup trial for spots.

Yeah hopefully we get another trial televised with our top squad.

This is very much a trial that gets my interest due to it being a long time since we've seen our team play and a chance to look at individuals.

Bunty Afoa will also be interesting too see as well.

The trials always trigger some excitement, reminder the season is almost here, love to see the team selections…

Have to be reminded that they are never predictive of anything much, the games are scrappy AF and the only thing to be sure of is the warriors will be sporting some manner of hideous training jersey.

Having said that getting the first look at new signings is always good, might as well focus on the forwards though, don’t think those young lads in the halves will be providing many sophisticated options for the backs. No Mason Lino?

Justin Morgan was on News Talk ZB on Saturday with Tony Veitch.

https://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/on-demand/week-on-demand/
First part is in the 17:00 - 17:15 Starts around 11 minutes.
Second part in the 17:15 - 17:30 section.

Goes over the 9s squad and the selection of it. Gould's criticism of the 9's in-terms of injuries. Hurrell's fitness. The perception of the club being unprofessional. Guys doing extras. Mitchell Pearce.

Before the video started Veitch and his producer mentioned Morgan said before he started the role. "If the guys attitude is right and they are willing to learn he'll get the best out of them". Hopefully that works and we don't wear him out.

Like McFadden he seems pretty good to listen to in interviews.

saturday or sunday? ... can't find it bro, just a chat with scotty stevenson?

Expecting a bit of rustiness and not much cohesion with this lot.. Wonder if the team are using those hideous looking orange jerseys, most disgusting jerseys I've ever seen to be honest.

That halves combo could be a little glimpse into the future of the club. I like the look of Clark, from what I've seen so far he looks the goods, same goes with Ata.

Good to see a lot of players on the fringes of first grade getting a bit of a run Charnze, Poching, Niukore, Tevaga, Kaveinga, Afoa

Guess Maumalo on the wing puts to bed any thought of him playing in the forwards unless the coaching staff have a change of mind throughout the season

Very excited to see Manu, Luke, Sao ,Gavet and Henry marshalling the young guns, should be interesting

Really interesting team named. Massive chasm between players in terms of the experience in that squad. Bunch of reasons to watch this game:

Isaac's first game in a Warriors jersey; Seeing how Manu and Benry (especially Benry) come back from injury; really looking forward to seeing how some of the "fringe" forwards go, Sao, Gavet, etc; Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad at centre; etc, etc.

It'll be a really intriguing trial.
