I reckon the Friday night at 8pm slot is ours to grab.

One of the things that kills us in PR in NZ is us getting hammered by a suburb of Sydney straight after the all blacks hammer a second string uninterested northern hemisphere team 100-0 on a Saturday night.

Sam Burgess’ return to the NRL will kick off against arch-rivals the Sydney Roosters in front of a potential sell-out Sunday afternoon crowd at Allianz Stadium on March 6.

In an effort to boost crowd numbers the NRL has announced a number of Sunday afternoon blockbusters in Sydney, scheduled for the family-friendly 4pm timeslot.

“We have certainly made an effort to ensure that some of our best match-ups and blockbusters are in family-friendly timeslots,” Greenberg said.

“Whilst I don’t want to give too much away, we will have a number of strong Sydney derbies on Sundays through the opening rounds of the Telstra Premiership.”

The NRL will release the draw for the 2016 season this week, however the governing body has already confirmed a number of Sunday blockbusters for the 4pm timeslot.

The southern derby of the Sharks and Dragons will headline the second round in the harbour city, while the Dragons will take Souths to the SCG in round three and host Penrith in round four.

Finally, the battle of the west will play out as Parramatta host Penrith in round five.

Crowd figures dropped to an average of 15,074 last season, their lowest figure since 2004.

On average, they dropped more than 800 fans per match on 2014, and were almost 1500 fans down than in 2005 on average.

Sydney clubs particularly struggled, with the Wests Tigers, Manly, Penrith and Cronulla all failing to average above 12,000 people per match.

Elsewhere, the Eels will reportedly host Brisbane in the first Thursday night match of the season, while the Cowboys look set to begin their premiership defence on a Saturday night to appease their regional supporter base.

I don't think we have ever played the Tigers in the first round?

Glad it's not the Eels or Broncos in round 1.

We always seem to play a wooden spooner team first up and lose, let's hope 2016 is a year of 1st for us

Pretty sure TBC is the Titans for the Canterbury game. I wonder why they're going with TBC, was it a typo or is there truth that the GC are changing names to the Bears.

Away round 1 again is a bit of a disappointment. There will be articles after round 1 about the crowds, hopefully pointing out again if they had the Warriors in Auckland they most likely would have drawn a bigger crowd. That would be quite likely being a new season with fresh expectations and two high profile recruits.

Hopefully we aren't set up for an ambush like we were when Farrah turned in a blinder.

3pm in Australia. It always seems like we play round 1 Sunday afternoon in Australia. Their scheduling for round 1 would be lets pick all of the games we want, get to the last game slot the Warriors in.

Well we have to play everyone at least once and this is a good chance to pick up an away win. Round 1 a new start, new recruits, time to make a statement.

Some Twitter gold... Manly fans at jumping up and down over their draw because they have a few games back to back.

Then this in response....gold!!

Manly's draw is fucked. Look at it and then ask yourself if you'd be happy about us getting the same thing.

The NRL are absolute idiots. They jump up and down about banning punching and the shouldercharge for 'player welfare' but they're happy for teams to play three games in 10 days when it suits them. You can't tell me that the possibility of a shoulder charge going high is any worse than the obvious detrimental effects of playing that often.

When Hasler or Toovey used to go on a rant with conspiracies about Manly being screwed again I used to chuckle. This time though Manly have a point no team should be getting asked to play that many times with short turn around times. The guys would take a day or so to recover and rehab from the game before training for the next one. If you add travel the problem gets worse.

The Storm had a similar schedule this year.

If we didn't have to have the marque teams playing in the high profile slots each week it would be a lot easier to do the draw.

Its easy to go meh too bad Manly. Bit of a worry for everyone with viewing interest conflicting with player welfare, fair play, and common sense.

Broncos fans have gripes about being given a hard draw ( looks like ours lol) they get the cruisey Fridays, people are always moaning....Manly have a case to complain.

When do the NRL release the dates of the rd 20-26 matches, and against the West's would you think a Sat or Sunday match ?

A Broncos supporter asked why they travelled to Auckland during Origin when the fixtures could have been swapped. Seems a reasonable question considering their Origin commitments.

A Broncos fan asking anything about scheduling is simply laughable - my response would be suck it up.

They get 18-20 Fri night games a year allowing them a consistent recovery and training or preparation schedule, play away games at Suncorp and are still the first to piss and moan about 1x 5day turnaround and having to fly 3hrs to an away game!!!

Stiff shit you spoilt brats, trying flying that far every 2nd week let alone 7hrs+ every year to Perth!!!

I don't hate the Broncs, but they struggle in day games or Sat/Sun games, they're going to have a lot more to whinge about from 2018....

A friend of mine who is a Rabbitohs supporters seems absolutely 100% certain that the Round 23 game against the Warriors at Mt Smart is on a Thursday. I cant find a single thing online to confirm it but he's booked his acom and all for it...

Were they wanting to know when they can find out if they are playing on Friday night?o_O
Most fans can answer that for them.............................chances are highly likely yes.;)

I know a lot of clubs or fans or fans of other clubs compain that the Warriors don't get Monday night games. But with the time zone it's not suitable for the main audience in Australia unless the games are scheduled later. Now with the climate here in NZ that should be done earlier in the season.

Thursday night seems strange for the same reasons. We already barely get Friday night games at home as the suitable kick off time is too early for the TV audience in Australia.

So to me the only reason we'd be getting a Thursday night game would be either someone has screwed up the draw somehow or the NRL want to appease some of the moaning clubs.

Don't get me wrong it suits me as I shouldn't have to stay up as late like the other Monday or Thursday night games.

I remember reading somewhere when some teams complained about the draw that the Warriors don't get Thursday Friday or Monday night home games as to fit into the time slot of 8pm it would need to kickoff at 10pm nz time can't see that happening

I was sure I had read somewhere a while back that it was on the Friday (looked up specifically cos WWE show in AKL is on the Wednesday of that week which I'll be coming up for).
But looking at all the draws where I thought I'd read that, now just showing TBC. Was I seeing things?!

Maybe a placeholder date those later rounds haven't been scheduled so the NRL can make sure teams in contention for the top 8 are playing in the prime time games

Another, but far less likely reason that I've heard, is they want to make sure their "big games" don't clash AFL as their season is getting closer to the playoffs. Personally, I don't think they would worry about that unless there was a potential ground clash.

He's probably read some league website that lists it as Thursday 8PM just because it's the first possible time slot - ie it's a placeholder or they can't spell TBC. TBC is what the NRL site says.

I'm very unkeen on Monday/Thursday games. Actually quite like the 5PM Saturday slot but would really like a 2pm Saturday game every so often.
