Thurston wins 2015 Dally M Medal

North Queensland Cowboys co-captain Johnathan Thurston has won the 2015 Dally M medal, beating the field by a record-breaking margin to claim his fourth Dally M, creating more history in the process.

After winning previously in 2005, 2007 and sharing the award last year with Jarryd Hayne, Thurston is the first player to clinch the prestigious award for player of the season four times, going one better than former Knights halfback and rugby league Immortal Andrew Johns.

Speaking at the Dally M awards event in Townsville, Thurston said it was an honour to again be voted as the competition's best.

"I can't explain what it means to be standing here in front of family, friends and teammates especially. The first people I'd like to thank are the teammates I train with every day," Thurston said.

"This award is as much theirs as it is mine. The coaching staff that have put the structures in place for us to execute, our medical staff, our fans who travel to watch us play."

Thurston also made special mention of his partner, before again highlighting the work of his teammates.

"Samantha, thank you very much for everything you do for me, I can't thank you enough, you're my rock.

"We play the game for friendships, I get to run around with my best mates week in and week out, when you're playing at Origin level and for your country as well. It's about having fun out there, it's a team game. The boys I have around me, they do all the hard work for me, I put the cream on top. It's been a heck of a year, I couldn't be more proud standing up here with my fourth Dally M award."

The Broncos workhorse and NRL Fantasy legend continues to get better with age, taking out the award for the best player in the representative arena.

"I think it's important you have a good mix [of youth and experience], in today's game the young guys let you know if you're getting on, and it gives you that drive," Parker said.

Last appearing in a grand final in 2006, Parker is fully focussed on making the most of the opportunity this season.

"I do have great memories [of 2006]. It's a very special week, only a few get to do it. From my point of view, I want to help our guys – our young players in particular – enjoy the week because it is something very special."

Provan Summons People's Choice Medal: Johnathan Thurston (North Queensland Cowboys)

Thurston collected the Provan Summons Medal for the second consecutive year, and thanked all those rugby league fans who voted him as their favourite player for another season.

"It's an extremely proud moment to receive this award for a second year. This is what we play the game for, the fans."

Ken Stephen Medal: Luke Douglas (Gold Coast Titans)

Titans forward Luke Douglas was recognised for his work in the community with the Ken Stephen Medal, revealing the driving force behind his work off the field.

"I'm passionate about charity work," Douglas said. "My mum was a teacher's aide. She worked with children with disabilities; I suppose it's rubbed off on me. She passed away a few years ago, and I'm trying to continue on her legacy."

Coach of the Year: Wayne Bennett (Brisbane Broncos)

In his first year back at the helm of the club he enjoyed so much success at, Bennett guided the Broncos to another grand final, and the master coach said he could sense something positive was building midway through the season.

"As things unfolded, we got halfway through the season I thought we were a chance of doing something pretty special, and that's the way it's unfolded for us," Bennett said. "The things that won 28 years ago still work today."

Peter Moore Award for Rookie of the Year: Jack Bird (Cronulla Sharks)

The Sharks rookie enjoyed a stellar first season, making his first grade debut from the bench in Round 4 before starting at five-eighth for the remainder of the year.

"It was a good season from the boys, especially from where they came last year," Bird, who moved from the Dragons in the off-season, said. "To finish in the top eight was a remarkable year from us. Paul Gallen and Mick Ennis, they're both good blokes, they try and bash me around at training, but it doesn't really work."

Well deserved for JT too. Great player. So much admiration for the way he plays the game and that burning desire to be a winner at everything he does. One hella competitor. Champion for giving his head gear at HT and FT to kids in the crowd. Might not be the best defender in the game but has full commitment to the cause and usually one of few still chasing after an opponent has made a break and his teammates had given up. Well deserved honour.

Hopefully Shaun Johnson will surpass him in years to come.

Some funny old nominations, unless they are counting that one good game in origin above everything else, Klemmer was no where near one of the top props on the season.
Can’t complain about the final team too much, early season wonders James Roberts and Blake Austin a bit lucky.

To be honest, I don't think we can compare Shaun Johnson to Thurston. At the age of 21, Thurston won a grand final at the dogs. At the age of 22, Thurston won the Dally M leading the Cowboys to their first GF.

Sure, it's taken 10 more years to get the Cowboys to another GF - but JT has won two more Dally M's in an underperforming team (and a couple of Golden Boots in the meantime).

Shaun Johnson has a golden boot off the back of a dominant sides performance last year. But so far for me, Shaun Johnson doesn't compare to what Thurston has brought to the game. And I don't mean that with the slightest bit of disrespect for Shaun Johnson - who I rate very highly. But Thurston is an immortal in waiting for a string of very good reasons.

The one that really shocked me last night... Not a single kiwi woman made the list of female player of the year... That totally showed bias...

At the dogs - yeah completely stacked side (I mean they had Asotasi, SBW and JT on the bench)... but the Cowboys 2005 side wasn't that stacked... A lot of experience and a few journeymen (decent props - but lacking a bit in other areas IMO).

I'd love to be wrong, and I hope I am, but right now I'd say we'll be lucky if Shaun Johnson deserves to win a Dally M (let alone actually manage to win one given the inherent bias towards Australian players in the judging)...

It was better than average - was it a superstar team? Tough one for me.

Looking at it through memories...

Bowen - x factor player - no doubt
Sing/Williams - both great finishers, and both did play rep footy, but neither rated as genuine superstars
Bowman/Hannay - really really really solid centres who did the basics well, really strong defensively - neither superstars
Smith at five eighth - journeyman - no real x-factor
Thurston - rookie half in his first year starting in first grade
Rauhihi/Tronc - solid, if not exceptional. Rauhihi was 32 at the time of the grand final, past his rampaging best.
Payne - agree. Very under-rated.
Southern, O'Donnell, Norton - couple of good journeymen, and O'Donnell at his best (approx).

That's why I was saying the side wasn't that stacked. Great blend of youth and experience, but reality was they had 2 superstars in Bowen and JT (and even then he was still in the making), a great hooker in Payne, and reliable players everywhere else... On paper it doesn't compare to that dogs side of 2004
