Tanner Stowers-Smith is the great-grandson of Kiwis and Canterbury league Pat Smith who captained the Kiwis between 1947-1949 in 36 matches with wins over Great Britain, France and Australia. Stowers-Smith is also a cousin of Jamayne Isaako.

Stowers-Smith is a Halwells Hornets junior in Christchurch, New Zealand.

In early 2016, Stowers-Smith was offered a two year development contract with the Canterbuy-Bankstown Bulldogs but was unable to fulfill the deal after covid put a stop to travelling and the junior competition was cancelled.

Stowers-Smith actually impressed during a pre-season trial at Parramatta in January 2016, but one of the Eels rivals pounced due to a connection between Halswell stalwart Jeff Whittaker and the Bulldogs pathways and development officer Craig Wilson.

In September 2022, Stowers-Smith was named in the Canterbury Crusaders Juniors squad.

In November 2022, Stowers-Smith joined the Warriors for preseason training.

On February 9 2023, Stowers-Smith played in the Warriors first trial game against the Wests Tigers at Mt Smart Stadium.
