A tall back row forward or prop, Sione Lousi is another graduate from the Vodafone Warriors’ development programme. With links to the Richmond and Bay Roskill clubs, he’s a product of Auckland’s St Paul’s College, which has developed a long line of Kiwis including Mark Graham, Dane O'Hara, Nigel Vagana, Stacey Jones, Joe Vagana, Jerome Ropati, Francis Meli and many more.
Injury restricted Lousi’s opportunities in his two seasons with the Vodafone Junior Warriors in the NYC but he was one of the side’s most influential players in his 17 appearances in 2009. He was one of five players to gain promotion to the NRL squad in the offseason. He did not disappoint in preseason trials, earning his NRL debut in the opening round of the year against Gold Coast, going on to make seven appearances in all.
He appeared in two NRL games in 2011 while also turning out for the Vulcans for most of the season and performing strongly. Sione’s most impressive year to date came in 2012, when he appeared in all but two NRL matches for the club. He unfortunately lost the opportunity to build on this momentum when he ruptured in his ACL in the club’s first NRL trial in 2013, forcing him out for the entire campaign.
