Born and raised in Toowoomba, Friend started playing rugby league at the age of five for Wests Juniors. In 2000 he joined the Brisbane Broncos feeder club the Toowoomba Clydesdales and in 2002 he moved to Brisbane to train full-time with the Broncos, making his first-grade debut later that year. Friend joined the Melbourne Storm in 2003 where he played until the end of the 2006 campaign. The following year, Nathan joined the new Gold Coast Titans franchise, becoming one of the founding members. In five years with the club he made 100 appearances, making him the most-capped Titan at the time. He was one of their consistent performers, often leading the team in tackles. He attracted the attention of the Vodafone Warriors and he was signed in time for the 2012 season, where he has become a fan favourite and one of the most heralded hookers the club has had on its roster.
