Royal was a chef in the Army and played Bartercard Cup for Central Falcons as well as representing Waikato.

Royal was signed by the Penrith Panthers but failed to make first grade playing in the NSW Cup in 2004. The following year he signed a 2 year contract with the Knights. Again he failed to break into the top grade but he was re-signed for another 2 years. It was during this new period that he would make his NRL debut and he would play 29 games.

Royal initially decided to work in the coalmines and play for the Kurri Kurri club from the 2009 season in order to spend more time with his family. However he later signed a two-year deal with the New Zealand Warriors in 2009, as injury cover for Evarn Tuimavave. He made his Warriors debut in Round Two 2009 against the Manly Sea Eagles, scoring a try with his first touch of the ball.
