On a positive note, I thought Berry is starting to show why we put all the faith in him. He looked great.
Agreed, other than that one play where he delayed the pass too long to DWZ and he ended up knocking it on.

we all got that passion for the same result,

Round 1 cobwebs out of the system with Storm a tough but appropriate challenge next week.

Someone got the bench rotation wrong and Webbys answer was a little muddled.

Metcalf is obviously hot and cold so no uppercuts required, great on the individual effort, poor on the team play and putting pressure on the opposition, particularly 4th 5th tackle

We don’t want to be 4 - 0 by the time CNK and Egan return so swallow some pride and put RTS at FB Pomp’s in centre and strengthen the bench.

SJ on his own has no space and limited options.

We must get 2 wins out of the first 4 games
As much as I’m a Pompey supporter, I’d have Leiataua and TMM for their combination I saw in nsw cup. A step up in grades but TMM is the senior halve behind SJ and Leiataua has debuted. I think the team could benefit from the confidence Leiataua has. Good option to have SJ and Berry on the right and TMM and Leiataua on the left I reckon

I haven’t read through the whole thread (it’s too sad to relive) so someone may have mentioned it already, but why in Rocco Berrys name was the victory/team song played during the halftime show!

We have bigger issues to take out of the game, but in terms of bad luck, that’s about as bad as it gets..

Im obviously not a fan of Metcalf other than he is an adequate back up player. I have watched him fairly closely as you have done for Reese Walsh. If anyone is expecting anything much more than what we saw tonight then it's going to be a long season for you. You will get the odd highlight reel play. That try he scored was a great try. But you can't ignore the rest of his game because those highlights are going to be few and far between and don't make up for the remaining chunk of play. You have RTS and Montoya outside him who looked sharp in the first trial with a half who has been out of the game for a season. What you saw last night is exactly what you saw last season with Pompey and Montoya and everyone was jumping on Pompey as the weak link. You only had to look at their body language to realise they were completely frustrated The reality is you have a guy with some speed who wants to be a half but has a very limited passing game and limited decision making. The trials he was caught on the 5th a few times or out of position when it mattered. Last night not aware enough for an RTS offload, caught on the last a few times (passing to AFB for the last tackle kick wtf?) and completely missing in that second half. If you talk about heart, Reece Walsh at least wants to be involved with the game on the line and have ball in hand trying something, creating something. Go back and watch the last 20 minutes. He is completely static on most plays. I actually think he looks lost and the team either don't trust him or he doesn't want to be involved when the going gets tough. I would even say that the team either can't rely on him, don't trust him, possibly don't like playing with him or even could be all of the above - watch the last 20 with those things in mind. I don't think I'm wrong.

SJ was playing for a long period there with a rookie FB who I thought was actually pretty good, just needs to work more on those link plays (CNK took a while to get them too), a back up 9 and a 6 who was missing - and he still kept us in the game.

So, IMO, expect more of the same. Highlight plays every so often. We will beat weaker teams but RTS and Montoya are unlikely to look good on that edge and unlikely to get much good quality, quick ball that puts then in space to take advantage of RTS skills. And, as I said preseason, you will have posters asking if RTS was worth bringing back and why he doesn't look that good at centre. You actually don't have to look far for the answer.

I expect largely the same team to be named next week with the exception of injuries. But I'm expecting the left edge to look pretty much the same and us to be competitive if we have 3/4 of our spine playing. We are better with TMM or dare I say it CHT at 6. They aren't perfect by any stretch of the imagination and will make errors too, but they would take us to 3.5/4 spine players and unlock that left edge.

That's all I've got to say about that. ☎️ (Is the hang up the phone the new mic drop?)
TMM 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

God the footy IQ of people on here is shocking.

Metcalf for whatever reason is going to get bagged no matter what by some of you.

Without him we probably score zero points yesterday.

The real concern is if Egan is injured cause without him our whole attack falls apart, we looked like a top 2 side when he was on and the second he went off everything literally fell apart.

Those suggesting to bring back Pompey and CHT need a swift uppercut cause you literally have no idea.
Ok graeme lowe, metcalf has a running game which is great when we are dominating the middle and have front foot ball like in the first 20 minutes. After that he did some on kicks but generally looked like he didn't know what to do and ran sideways so the defence slid on RTS And Montoya.
He has some skills but TMM would unlock that side better imho.

Edit: inruin beat me to it, I just said what he already said and I don't like to agree with him 😉 but he is right this time. The ref was shit too.

At least there wasn’t a made up recording of them winning the comp. Done that one already

Yup, for the good of the team. Good to see you don't refute any of the other points.
Bit harsh to put the loss down to Metcalf solely.
You have always had a sort of bitch hate on him for some peculiar reason.
Sure he was missing for periods but all teams are lacking in combinations and confidence in the early stages of the season.

You only need to look at the results to see the proof

Hey Luke, Do you mind giving us a background on your hand up the phone celebration last night?

I say keep the same team because one of the reasons we were good last year is Webby allowed for games where things didn't quite click and stuck solid with lineups unless it was warrented.
If you chop and change after every game, we'll have two consecutive games in the whole season where the spine is the same (ie, they'll all be good in the first game, than whoever's Fullback has a bit of a brain fart, so screw him, it's Fullback Option #3's turn) and it won't be at all pretty.

I agree entirely with this too. LM has a massive learning curve if he wants to be a real 6, never mind a 7. Seems to me he does not want to work hard for the team, and has a selfish attitude, only passing/offloading when he cannot shine irrespective of what pressure is going to be applied to the receiver. I'm not surprised RTS and Montoya had tough games, they were squeezed out of space.

TMM and CHT both had pretty good games for NSW Team, defending strongly and neither playing selfishly. Both could have in trying to differentiate themselves for 1st team selection. I'd bring in TMM to 6 and CHT to 9 with Lussick on the bench. LM has not warranted reselection, irrespective of his excellent opportunistic try.

Fingers crossed for both Egan and Capewell, we certainly need both in the team. Niukore was missed.

Was at the game and the announcer was absolute crap, childish and embarrassing and the club will get an email from me and I invite others to do the same otherwise we will have to put up with it all season

I agree with Tragic above - penalty try all day and to hear the ref say he couldn’t be sure that DWZ would get the ball to ground was laughable. If no PT then at least a sinbin for professional foul yet ref says it wasn’t foul play.
Absolutely agree 100%. Had to be a penalty try or a sin bin. Clear try scoring opportunity denied. And what advantage did we get from it? Sharks benefit from the foul play by denying 4 - 6 points. We get 6 tackles.

Please explain bunker.

Tmm made a fatal error in getting sucked into the ruck when the dummy half went through the middle and scored. Needs to get that out of his head.
Cht kicking and general play is not up to FG standards yet.
Metcalf needs more time with SJ and RTS.
Any new 6 will be the same

I really laughed at this part in particular. Love it!

Sums it up perfectly! I think we can all get behind a saying like this...

Bitch Hate
verb
feel intense dislike for.
"Inruin continues to bitch hate on LM"
Similar:
loathe
detest
dislike greatly

noun
intense dislike.
"feelings of unrelentless dislike for a player despite that player doing some things quite well"
Similar:
loathing
hatred
detestation
dislike

SJ’s kicking was awful, too many grubbers. After DWZ no try penalty never went that route again. That grubber he did on tackle 3 or 4 in the Sharks 20 summed up the clunky performance. The passing to RTS and giving him some room was off.

Reality, round 1. Panthers looked clunky and so have a lot of other sides. Positive for me was Rocco Berry, he was our best along with AFB and Mr Consistent Tohu. Some of Websters subs had me puzzled and leaving Lussick on for way too long.

Hope Laban, Helasima or some other promising youngsters get a stat on a bench which didn’t offer a lot. CHT for average Lussick, who might make his tackles but post contact yardage is an issue. Jackson Ford, no offence mate but please get homesick and ask for a release. Hands like feet!

CNK and Marata to come back, can’t come soon enough.
