Social Movies

It has been a terrible year for Hollywood. They like to still blame the pandemic but there has been some hits since the pandemic. The writers and actors strikes were poorly timed.

The main thing is this has building for years with them playing it safe, pushing an agenda, budgets blowing out.

A lot of movies haven't made a profit. The Marvel movies started at $150-$180 million. Now a lot of movies are reporting $250 million for their budget but have a lot of re-shoots as they haven't done their preparation in the writing room or the movies don't test well. That adds to the budget. Then the marketing is typically a similar amount. Having to make $400 million plus before you break even isn't a great strategy.

Some of the big studios are in financial trouble. Warner Brothers and Paramount are in discussions for a merger. Disney are in trouble. Their CEO's main strategy is to just buy franchises. You still need to create content.

The biggest studios at the moment are Netflix, Apple and Amazon. The last two their main business is computers & phones and then online retail. The media is a nice to have business to diversify into. Not their primary business.

Streaming also doesn't seem to be the great revenue stream they were thinking. For the consumer it's convenient but it doesn't look to be a great business.

On the Vin Diesel allegations. I'll wait until the full details come out. Sure there has been a lot of dodgy behaviour in Hollywood. The MeToo movement has exposed a lot of it but there are also a few who has taken advantage of it.

The Johnny Depp case for one.

The Marlyn Manson case is another one. The main actress there is a better actor then Amber Heard so could be more convincing on the witness stand. But then she has been pushing other woman to make things up and has also impersonated an FBI agent by send letter as the guy.

Also in the Manson case the judge discussed with one ladies lawyer that even after all of this time I need to take these seriously. Lawyer agrees. Anything she tells me I need to take on board. Lawyer agrees. Judge asked this story of aliens abducting here and she know remembers after 20 years isn't stretching that statement in the law. Lawyer hmm umm hmm.

This lady only worked for Diesel for a few days so an incident could have happened causing here to move on. But some of the details also don't stack up.

As much as society needs to be cleaned up. Men still deserve to be proven guilty and not guilty just because of allegations. Some instances in Hollywood the studios have sacked people on allegations and let some of their favourites off or need to wait until they are proven guilty.

Ezra Miller went on drug fuelled rampages in Hawaii. Breaking into houses, holding people hostage, getting into fights with women. Hollywood Ezra is having a few issues.
Vin Diesel does have a bit of a rep of being a bit of a diva but you’re exactly right he deserves the ‘wait and see’ opportunity rather than the recent knee jerk instant punishment that many have experienced.
On the surface i am always a bit sceptical about ‘victims’ that wait an extended period of time (;in this case 13 years) before pressing charges, also the 9 day employment thing gives the impression of a woman scorned.
Actually think the recent handling of the Jonathan Majors incident was the right tact. 1. An allegation was made, 2. It appeared there may have been more to the story from Majors side, 3. He was found guilty and was then fired.
Unfortunately there are those out to take advantage on both sides

After the allegations came out it appeared that Majors had a reputation. I did get sceptical when the footage came out of his girl friend chasing him out of the car and around the street.

The main actress I've always believed is Rose McGowan as I remember when the Grindhouse movies came out there was rumours of her being difficult by a certain studio. When allegations came out years ago hers matched up with the issues she had back then in terms of being deemed difficult.

The other thing that doesn't help Hollywood is all of the actresses is all of the footage of actresses gushing over Harvey Weinstein in interviews or at award ceremonies. Sure they needed him but it still doesn't look good after their star power increased and they could have spoken up and stopped it or saved a younger actress.

Curious to see what Rebel Moon is like. Started off as a Star Wars concept so will be interesting to see how much of the feel it retains. Also for all his flaws Snyder does usually make visually appealing movies
watched it yesterday. this was genuinely one of the worst films I've ever seen (considering the 166 million usd budget)

i could open up a rant about everything wrong with it but i wont. Also i understand there is an r rated directors cut coming....... there is zero reason for this Zack has full control over the movie, if you cant have a coherent movie in an over 2 hour movie a directors cut wont save you.

I don't hate Zack Synder but I'm rather of the opinion the man should stick to being a DOP.

Had a bit of time over the last week to kill and revisited some movies I hadn't watched for a while.

Seven
Fallen
Fracture
Unbreakable
Split

Enjoyed them all again which was pleasing

Also watched
The Big Short
Moneyball

Two good movies based off real life.

I haven't had time to see Rebel Moon yet. The discussion I have seen haven't made it too appealing.

Their view was we need to make it PG13 for a wider audience and Snyder wanted to do something more adult. Hence the second release. It does seem like Netflix & Snyder have drunk a bit of the kool aid around the Justice League Snyder Cut which was due to the circumstances in the making of Justice League.

Back in the days of physical media or releasing in theatres it seems a bit weird having a Directors Cut in the days of streaming. Typically with streaming you are not as restricted time wise like directors have been with traditional theatre releases. Same with TV shows which traditionally have to fit a certain time to fit in ad breaks. Now they can tell the story and use the time they need.

I thought the Plot and the script and the dialogue was heinous.

I was going to watch it out of curiosity but wont now. The trailer made it look like a run of the mill dystopian sci-fi with grimy muted colour and unconvincing CGI. It's funny how the original Star Wars trilogy, Aliens, Terminator 2, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws and Jurassic Park still look more appealing than the big budget movies of today.

I watched Spielberg's Duel recently. A brilliant and great looking movie from the early 70's that was originally made for TV.

A lot of those movies you mentioned did a lot more with the budget they had. A lot of those movies starting out had a simple story where today's they seem to get complicated, look for twists, or go too heavy on the CGI.

The original Star Wars is a simple story of a farm boy getting taken away on an adventure. The story is based off the heroes journey. You could make a point the original Terminator follows a similar arc with Sarah Connor following a simple life before getting dragged into a conflict.
