Re your critique of the Auckland city rail loop

The loop unlocks capacity
The capacity to run lots of extra trains
The opportunity to carry more passengers and take cars off Auckland chronically congested roads
Electric trains which can run on renewable energy

Any city of a certain size has an underground loop line Sydney/ Melbourne to name two.

I wouldn’t worry about what accountants are saying but projecting yesterdays revenue numbers

Patronage will exceed their calculators total

Glad to help
I’m actually pro the city loop and half my post was in dismay and jest about the cost and time taken.

The issue and NZ’s big issue is our productivity is killing us. We’re so slow and inefficient at building infrastructure, we end up build half the amount of anyone else at twice the cost. That’s a huge drag on us as a country stopping us getting good stuff everyone else takes for granted. Crippling financially and in lost opportunity.

The loop is going to take 10 years to build, announced in 2013, fully funded in 2015 and still at least a year from being finished… before 6 months commissioning, etc

The $2.86b cost has almost doubled to $5.4b with more cost over runs to come.

I drive through our local Bayfair roadworks which is a couple of Bridges and a roundabout and it’s been going on since 2015 and isn’t finished yet and is double budget. The joke about NZ having more road cones than sheep isn’t so funny when it’s you realise it’s true 😂

I’m strongly of the belief technology and ai will solve a lot of the worlds problems around climate change, scientific advancement, enhanced food production and solve poverty to make us all better off. But I see it a long way off and with human nature, as our needs are met, we will just demand more and more and always feel we don’t have enough.

Ai definitely has its advantages - I call on it sometimes at work - but it’s way above my comprehension to fully understand any existential threat. It is scary how much it can ‘understand’ and could potentially outwit us. But like a Pandora’s box, once it’s unleashed is there any way of holding it back?

Personally I don’t worry to much. It’s like with the threat of nuclear war, it’s out of my control so no point stressing to much about it.
How long before Maori call AI racist against Maori! 🤣

Why the anti-Maori sentiment?

This one then? Ai will racially profile Maori and arrested more…

I’m more worried about all these new speed cameras profiling us productive people that need to get places in a hurry!

Aren't those fair concerns considering it has literally had that problem in the US?

Well let’s just defer to our resident expert WarriorBot WarriorBot

Are you racist? Do you discriminate against Maori?

Are you entitled to you use Te Reo, if Maori own data sovereignty over the language and all things Maori?

Do you have the right to do a karakia if it is taonga?

The new govt has basically removed the government telling us what to do:

The govt won’t decide who smokes, owns gun, what language we speak, what transport to use, etc.

All the people on here complaining that the government isn’t telling us what to do need to reflect on why the last govt was hated so much… the whinging and mock outrage is very entertaining!

Helen Clarke got turfed when they started telling us what shower heads to use as well. I can’t believe some of you are so into communism 🤣

It's hard to be polite with any of this.

Fuck everyone else eh, that's the mantra of this government. The cult of the individual, the billionaire, the wealthy.

Who cares about community right? Who cares that the poor are getting reamed again - they're being told what to do. Maori are being told left right and centre what to do by this racist government.

Smoking? Decided through poison and addiction. Guns? Guns are a privilege, not a right. They don't belong in a normal society.

Whinging and mock outrage - you've just described the right for the last 6 years, bullshitting their way very cleverly to power, no facts, backed with wealthy elite money.
